Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Douglas Arguello blanked the Missions through the first six innings while Drew Locke, Ray Sadler and Jhon Florentino delivered run-scoring hits in Corpus Christi's 4-3 win in the series opener Saturday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
The Hooks, who had not scored a run in losses at home to Midland Thursday and Friday, pounced on San Antonio starter Ernesto Frieri for a pair of runs in the first. Leadoff man Wladimir Sutil doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt by Collin DeLome, who was credited with a sacrifice and reached first on Frieri's fielding error.
Locke followed with a single to right to plate Sutil with the game's first run. Jason Castro grounded into a double play, moving DeLome to third. Sadler's double to left brought DeLome in for a 2-0 score.
It stayed that way until the sixth. Mark Ori walked with one out and went to second on Chad Spann's single to center. Frieri (9-9) was lifted at that point, having thrown 106 pitches, for reliever Carlos Guevara.
Florentino welcomed him to the fray with a hard double to the gap in left-center to get both Ori and Spann home for a 4-0 Corpus Christi advantage. Florentino tried to stretch his hit to a triple but was out in a close play at third.
Arguello (3-4) carried a four-hit shutout into the seventh. Seth Johnston opened the home seventh with a double off Florentino's glove at third, snapping a string of 10 in a row set down by Arguello. Lance Zawadzki singled off the glove of Sutil at short, putting runners at the corners.
Arguello uncorked a wild pitch to Mitch Canham, scoring Johnston and moving Zawadzki to second. Canham eventually struck out, the final act for Arguello. Later in the inning, pinch hitter Eric Sogard doubled off reliever Erick Abreu to bring Zawadzki in, trimming Corpus Christi's lead to two.
The Missions pulled to within a run in the ninth. Michael Collins doubled to right-center with one out and moved to third on a ground out by pinch hitter Anthony Contreras. Cedric Hunter singled to left, scoring Collins to make it 4-3.
Evan Englebrook, who notched the final two outs in the eighth, got Jesus Lopez to line out to Locke in right to end the game. The save was Englebrook's seventh.
Arguello allowed two runs on six hits in his 6.1 innings on the hill. He struck out six and did not issue a walk, throwing 93 pitches.
Abreu, who had made six appearances and five starts for Triple-A Round Rock, rejoined the Hooks Saturday night, bringing Corpus Christi's active roster to 24 players. He allowed two hits during his one inning of relief.
Locke finished the evening 2-for-3 with an RBI, pushing his league-leading RBI total to 109. He now has 169 hits, four shy of Josh Anderson's franchise record for hits in a single season.
Kenny Baugh (4-3, 4.26) battles San Antonio southpaw Cory Luebke (3-2, 2.58) in Sunday's 6:05 p.m. start.
