
Hawks Halt Miners Win Streak In Game 1

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford touched up all-star Ryan Bird for seven runs and beat the Miners, 7-3, in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday night in Rockford. The game ended the Miners record winning streak at 10 games and cut their first place lead to just a half-game.
Despite starting the game with three scoreless innings, Bird (9-6) surrendered six earned runs off nine hits in 4.1 innings to take the loss. Rockford starter Brett Durand held the Miners to three runs off five hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The RiverHawks broke the game open with a four-run rally in the fifth. The rally began when Miners shortstop Tony Roth bobbled a potential double play ball with one out. The next four batters reached base. Bird left the game after Derrick Walker's two-run double.
Offensively the Miners were led by Landon Camp, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Landon Hale, went delivered two doubles and drove in a run. Alex Rollin and Chris Stewart combined for 1.2 perfect innings.
In Game 2 of the twin bill, Southern Illinois will send Ryan Kussmaul (3-0) to the mound against Rockford lefty Fabian Gomez (4-3, 5.61). The Miners return home on Tuesday, Sept. 1 against the Windy City ThunderBolts.
