Springfield, Mo. - The Travs lost their third in a row getting swept by the Springfield Cardinals 12-6 on Thursday, July 28, at Hammons Field in front of 4,411. The Travs went 2-5 on their recent road trip and have lost 14 of their past 18 games.

The Travs (15-18) jumped on Cardinals starter lefty Nick Additon when Matt Cusick singled to center field to get the game started and scored when left fielder Chris Pettit hit his third home run of the year to left field, giving the Travs a 2-0 lead.

After a fly out by Luis Jimenez for the first out, first baseman Roberto Lopez had a 1-1 count before he hit his fourth home run in the past four games to make it 3-0. Gabe Jacobo and Angel Castillo hit consecutive singles to put runners at first and second base, but they were left on when Jon Townsend struck out and Aberto Rosario grounded out.

Cardinals second baseman Jose Garcia reached on a throwing error by the second baseman Cusick to begin the bottom of the second inning and ended up at third base when Travs starter lefty Andrew Taylor loaded the bases after giving up a single to third baseman Zack Cox and walked Jermaine Curtis. Right fielder Chris Swauger brought the Cardinals within 3-2 when his single to center field scored Garcia and Cox.

Taylor walked catcher Audry Perez to reload the bases and gave up a two-run double by designated hitter Daryl Jones to give the Cardinals a one-run lead at 4-3. James Rapoport hit a single to score Perez and Ryan Jackson hit into a double play, but scored Jones to put the Cardinals up 6-3.

Taylor (2-8, 4.57) gave up seven runs (five earned) on six hits for the loss. He struck out one, but walked four.

The Travs loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with one out on two walks and a single, and Pettit picked up his third RBI of the game when Additon walked him to score Townsend and make it a 6-4 Travs' deficit. With the bases still loaded, Jimenez struck out and Lopez grounded out to leave the Travs sixth man on base through the first four innings.

Additon pitched three and one-third innings for the no-decision and gave up four runs on seven hits, striking out three with three walks. Righty reliever Scott Schneider (6-8, 5.96) retired every man he faced for the win. Schneider pitched a perfect two and two thirds and struck out two.

Jimenez hit a one-out double, his Texas League-leading 33rd, to right field in the top of the seventh and advanced to third on a passed ball by the catcher Perez. Jimenez scored to make it 8-5 when Lopez grounded out to second base.

The Cardinals (14-19) added one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, two in the seventh and Cox and Mitchell hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to make it a 12-5 Springfield advantage.

Clay Fuller pinch hit for Chris Giovinazzo in the top of the ninth inning and hit a home run for the final 12-6 margin. Fuller homered in his last professional at bat as he announced his retirement earlier in the day. He plans to play football for the Baylor Bears after his baseball career.

Petit went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and scored a run and Lopez went 1 for 5 with two RBIs. Over the past five games, Lopez is batting .400 (8 for 20) with four home runs and eight RBIs.

Rapoport led the Cardinals 13-hit attack batting 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jackson, Cox, Swauger and Jones each had two hits for Springfield with Jones adding four RBIs. Cox went 2 for 3 scoring a season-high three runs and adding two RBIs.

The Travs had nine hits and left seven men on base, batting 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals also left seven men on base, but hit 6 for 13 with RISP in a two hour 59 minute game.
