August 15, 2011 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release

North Little Rock - The San Antonio Missions ended the Travs' six-game winning streak, defeating them 5-3 in front of an announced crowd of 3,817 on Monday, Aug. 15, at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Texas League North division leader Northwest Arkansas Naturals lost to the Midland Rockhounds, so the Travs remained a game back.

The Missions took their first lead of the series in the top of the first when leadoff man Daniel Robertson doubled to left field and scored on Jaff Decker's one-out double to right. Travs' starter righty Orangel Arenas walked the next batter, induced a fly ball to right field for the second out, and gave up an RBI-single to Carlos Sosa to put the Missions up 2-0.

The Travs got a run back in the bottom of the inning when birthday boy Chris Pettit hit a one-out triple to left-center field off of Missions starter Robbie Erlin, and scored on Luis Jimenez' sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Erlin pitched two innings for the no-decision, giving up a run on a hit and striking out one. He pitched only two innings because of a high-pitch count on the season. Jorge Reyes (7-3, 3.50) got the win pitching three innings of relief. He didn't give up a run on two hits and struck out four.

Arenas struck out the side in the top of the fourth inning, but the top of the fifth was a different story. After striking out Blake Tekotte looking, Arenas gave up consecutive singles to Decker and Jedd Gyorko. He walked Sawyer Carroll to load the bases and walked in a run to make it a 3-1 Missions' lead when he gave up a base on balls to Sosa.

Seven-foot, one-inch reliever Loek Van Mil came in for Arenas and catcher Ali Solis hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Gyorko. Amadeo Zazueta singled to reload the bases and Van Mil walked in Dean Anna to make it 5-1 Missions.

Arenas (8-7, 4.09) picked up the loss giving up five runs on six hits in four and one-third innings. He struck out five and walked five, struggling with control most of his outing.

The Travs made it a two-run game in the bottom of the seventh inning started by a one-out walk by Darwin Perez. Second baseman Jesus Campos singled to right field to put runners on second and third and Perez scored to make it 5-2 on Mike Trout's single up the middle. Pettit was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jimenez scored Campos with his second sac fly of the game to make it 5-3.

The two teams combined to use 11 pitchers with the Travs' relief core pitching four and two-thirds scoreless innings. Van Mil, Jeremy Berg, lefty Robert Fish, and Steven Geltz gave up two hits and struck out six with two walks.

Trout went 2 for 5 with an RBI to lead the Travs and Jimenez had two RBIs from his sacrifice flies, finishing 0 for 2.

Decker went 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI for the Missions, and Sosa went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Zazueta went 2 for 4.

The Travs went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base, and the Missions left 11 men on, batting 3 for 13 with RISP in a 3-hour, 5-minute game.

The Travs have an off day and travel to Corpus Christi to play the Hooks on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Whataburger Field. Righty Eddie McKiernan (7-10, 5.17) will start for the Travs and lefty Brett Oberholtzer (0-1, 3.60) gets the start for the Hooks.
