Arkansas Travelers News Release
Midland, Texas - Jermaine Mitchell singled four times, scored a run and knocked one run in to lead the Midland RockHounds to a 7-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Thursday night at Citibank Ballpark. In losing for the first time in the second half, the Travs also saw their season-best seven-game winning streak halted in a ballpark where they've gone 0-4 in 2011. Matt Cusick led the Travs with three base hits, while Darwin Perez had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
With the loss the Travs drop to 6-1 in the second half and 42-32 overall, while Midland improves to 4-3 in the second half and 31-46 overall.
Trevor Reckling wasn't able to squeak out of difficult situations as he had in the previous three games he'd pitched. He got into trouble in the second inning with a leadoff walk to Adam Heether then allowed a single by Stephen Parker setting up runners at first and third with no outs. Reckling induced a double play from Jeremy Barfield but Heether scored putting Midland on top 1-0.
Midland starter Jason Bergmann held the Travs at bay until the third inning when Clay Fuller worked a leadoff walk then stole second base. Mike Trout's infield single didn't move Fuller up, but he scored when Perez yanked a base hit down the first-base line to tie the game, at 1-1. Trout was tagged out at the plate attempting to score from first base on a great relay throw from Tyler Ladendorf. Perez took third base on the play at the plate and scored when Chris Pettit lifted a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 Travs lead.
Once again the first two batters of the fourth inning reached base on singles by Michael Spina and Heether. Parker's fielder's choice moved Spina to third base where he scored from on a sacrifice fly by Barfield, tying the game at 2-2.
Trout led off the top of the fifth with a long fly ball to the centerfield warning track which was dropped by Peterson for a triple. Trout scored when Perez's grounder was booted by Ladendorf for the first of three errors in the inning. Bergmann gave Perez second base on a wild pickoff throw, then he moved to third base on a fielder's choice that Chris Pettit grounded into. A Luis Jimenez sacrifice fly scored Perez for a 4-2 Travs lead.
Reckling couldn't hold that lead either allowing two runs in the fifth inning. The Hounds loaded the bases with one out on singles by Mitchell and Grant Green and a walk to Peterson. Reckling struck out Spina but couldn't get out of the inning as Heether knocked in two runs with a base hit to centerfield to tie the game, at 4-4.
Reckling pitched a perfect sixth inning, as did Bergmann, and was charged with four runs on eight base hits and three walks with three strikeouts in earning his second no-decision in a row. Bergmann also got a no-decision fiving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in six innings.
Christian Scholl relieved for the Travs in the seventh inning and allowed Mitchell's fourth single to begin the inning. Mitchell stole his second base of the day to get into scoring position then was bunted to third by Green. Peterson stroked an RBI single to center field bringing Mitchell home with the winning run.
The eighth inning was a rough one for the Travs bullpen as Robert Fish reinjured his left leg covering first base and had to leave the field on a cart. Midland scored two runs, both charged to Fish, on a bases-loaded walk to Mitchell issued by David Carpenter and a sacrifice fly by Green.
The Travs managed just two base hits in the last four inning.
Time of game was 3:10 and the paid attendance was 4,995.
The second of this three-game series is set for Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Travs send Eddie McKiernan (3-6, 5.77) to the mound against A.J. Griffin (First game at Midland).
