Arkansas Travelers News Release
San Antonio - Six Arkansas Travelers took part in the 2011 Texas League All-Star Game. The Travs have won seven games in a row, but their winning ways couldn't carry over in the exhibition as the South team defeated the North team 3-2. Three position players and three pitchers from Arkansas played for the North.
Angels' No. 1 prospect Mike Trout (.325, 9 HR, 26 RBI, 26 SB) started in centerfield and played the whole game, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Batting leadoff, Trout, 19, grounded out in the first inning, singled to left field in the third, struck out swinging in the fifth, and singled to right field for an RBI in the seventh inning, scoring Springfield's Ryan Jackson for the final run of the game for the North squad. Trout had the only multi-hit game for the North.
Luis Jimenez (.297, 11 HR, 60 RBI, 26 doubles), the Angels' No. 22 prospect, started at third base for the North and batted third, going 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Jimenez, 23, is the league's reigning player of the week, played the entire game and made the only error of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the South did not score as a result.
Darwin Perez (.309, 1 HR, 34 RBI, 13 SB) started at shortstop for the North and batted ninth. Perez, 21, did not record an official at bat as he walked in his only two plate appearances before being replaced by Jackson in the bottom of the sixth inning.
On the pitching side of the game for the Travs, Angels' No. 7 prospect Garrett Richards (9-1, 3.30) started for the North. Richards, 23, a righty and Texas League leader in wins, pitched one scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out two. After giving up a one-out single to Midland's Jermaine Mitchell in the bottom of the first, Richards struck out Frisco's Michael Bianucci and San Antonio's James Darnell to end the inning.
Texas League ERA leader Matt Shoemaker (6-1, 2.64) pitched the bottom of the third and was roughed up. Shoemaker, a righty, gave up a leadoff triple Mitchell. After Bianucci popped out to Perez, Darnell, the game's MVP, hit a two-run homerun to left field to give the South a 3-0 lead. Shoemaker, 24, went on to walk two more batters without any more damage being done.
Travs' closer Ryan Brasier (0-1, 0.74, 15 SV) pitched the bottom of the fifth inning and gave up a hit without allowing a run, and struck out one. The righty Brasier, 23, gave up a leadoff double to Midland's Michael Spina in the fifth before getting the final three outs, the last one coming from a strikeout of San Antonio's Ali Solis.
The Travs had a Texas League-high nine players named to the all-star team, but injuries played a part in a couple absences. Travs' second baseman Ryan Mount (.329, 5 HR, 34 RBI) was named to the all-star game, but did not play because of season-ending surgery to his right foot. Travs' starting pitchers Orangel Arenas (7-3, 3.82) and Trevor Reckling (3-6, 3.47) were named to the North team, but did not pitch in the game. Arenas was taken out of a game after the first inning on June 27 because of minor back tightness.
