Travs Set 2012 Bar in 11-6 Win

Springdale, Arkansas - After going 18 innings without scoring the Arkansas Travelers set a 2012 high in runs scored during an 11-6 victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Monday night at Arvest Ballpark. Led by three base hits by shortstop Jean Segura, the Travs collected 12 base hits on a night where all nine starters reached base. Casey Haerther was one of three Travs to drive in two runs and also hit a home run (8). Renny Osuna and Ryan Mount each collected two runs batted in as the Travs earned their third win in five games.
The victory pushes the Travs to a 10-13 second half record, 6.5 games behind the division-leading Springfield Cardinals. Northwest Arkansas suffered their 13th loss in 14 games to fall to 5-18 in the second half.
A pair of home runs staked the Naturals to a 3-0 lead over Travs starter Orangel Arenas. Manny Pina went deep for a solo shot in the second inning (3) and Brian Fletcher hit a two-run bomb in the third inning.
Naturals lefty Noel Arguelles (2-10) kept the Travs off the scoreboard for three innings, but they broke through in the fourth inning for four runs. Roberto Lopez hit the first pitch for a double then advanced to third base when Brian Hernandez walked on a wild pitch. Both scored when Mount doubled to right-center and took third base on the throw home. Arguelles walked Jimmy Swift setting up a double play, but Alberto Rosario knocked in Mount with a high chopper to third base for the second out. Angel Castillo put the Travs on top for good when he clobbered a double to right-center knocking in Swift for a 4-3 lead. Castillo was thrown out at third base to end the inning.
The Travs got right back to it again in the fifth inning with a leadoff single by Segura. Arguelles retired the next two batters, but Hernandez drove an RBI double to the left field fence and Haerther powered a 2-0 pitch for a two-run homer giving the Travs a 7-3 lead.
Arenas allowed four consecutive singles in the fifth inning with Fletcher and Johnny Whittleman driving in one run each. Arenas though picked off Fletcher at second base and induced Kevin Kouzmanoff to bounce out leaving the Travs with a 7-5 lead.
Arenas struck out the side in the sixth inning and set down the last seven batters he faced to earn his first win since May 17. He completed six seven innings and was charged with five runs on eight hits and a walk while adding five strikeouts.
Arguelles was done in the fifth inning with seven runs on six walks and seven hits in 4.2 innings to suffer his second loss to the Travelers.
Ethan Hollingsworth walked Castillo to begin the Travs's sixth inning, then he stole second base and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Segura. With the Naturals infield playing up, Osuna hit a high chopper over the head of second baseman Rey Navarro knocking in Castillo for a 8-5 lead.
An odd series of events led to three Travs runs in the eighth inning thanks to wildness by Naturals reliever Ryan Dennick. Rosario walked to start the inning then Dennick slipped when fielding a sacrifice bunt by Castillo and threw wildly to second base. Segura then bunted to the left of the mount and Dennick had trouble with the transfer and threw wildly to first base for his second error. Rosario scored on the play then Castillo scored on a wild pitch and Segura came to the plate when Osuna lined a double off the left field wall.
Fletcher capped the scoring with his second homer of the night, a solo shot to the opposite field off Buddy Boshers.
Time of game was 3:00 and the paid attendance was 3,575.
The Travs and Naturals are back to action again on Tuesday with Matt Oye (2-5, 4.63) pitching against NWA's Sugar Ray Marimon (1-2, 4.29). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
