Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The troubles continued at the plate for the Arkansas Travelers (0-5) as they managed only four base hits in an 8-0 loss to the Frisco RoughRiders (5-0). No Arkansas runner advanced to third base while only two made it as far as second base. Frisco finished with twelve base hits including eight extra-base hits. Frisco 3B Emerson Frostad was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Riders RHP Trey Hodges (1-0) went six innings for the victory allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
The Travs started RHP Jesse Smith (0-1), but he was pulled in the third inning after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings. After Smith set down the first five Frisco batters, Max Ramirez hit a hard smash close to third base and Corey Smith lunged to glove it. However his throw bounced into the dugout giving Ramirez second base on a single and an error. Frostad followed with a double past first base to bring in the game's first run. With Steve Murphy batting, Smith uncorked a wild curveball in front of the batter that took a high bounce away from the plate. Travs C Ben Johnson thought the batter was hit by the pitch, but no call was made and Frostad scored from second for a 2-0 Frisco lead.
Craig Gentry opened the third inning with a high fly ball that RF Jordan Renz misread. The ball flew over his head and bounced over the right-field wall for a book-rule double. John Mayberry's one-out double scored him and Chris Davis ended Smith's day with a two-run homer (1) to right field.
Trailing 5-0 the Travs used RHP Bill Edwards to finish the third. Edwards twirled two scoreless innings before allowing a sixth-inning double by Davis. Edwards was replaced by RHP Von Stertzbach with two outs, and Ramirez hit a low liner to left field. Aaron Peel charged and missed on a diving attempt allowing the ball to roll to the fence for an RBI triple. Frostad then hit a sharp infield single scoring Ramirez for a 7-0 lead.
Frisco tacked on another run in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.
The paid attendance was 9,099, a new Dickey-Stephens Park record. The game was played in 2:40.
The Travs wrap up the season-opening six-game homestand on Tuesday with a night game against the RoughRiders. Arkansas sends RHP Fernando Rodriguez (0-1, 4.50 ERA) to the hill versus Frisco LHP Matt Harrison (1-0, 1.59 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. and the gates open at 6:10 p.m.
