Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Midland RockHounds kept the Springfield Cardinals out of the run column and out of the win column on Monday night, shutting out the Cardinals by a score of 12-0 at Hammons Field. The Cardinals are now 0-5, their worst start in franchise history. Midland moves to 5-0, as they look for the three-game sweep on Tuesday at Hammons Field.

Jesus Guzman recorded his second straight four-hit game, pacing an 18-hit Midland offense.

Midland took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. Cards' starter Adam Daniels walked Cliff Pennington to open the game, then after a wild pitch, allowed an RBI single to Brian Snyder, making it 1-0.

The Hounds got a run in the second on a Guzman RBI single and another in the third, courtesy of Justin Sellers' RBI single, giving them a 3-0 advantage against Daniels and the Cards.

Daniels (0-1) was chased after four innings, as the left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits in his 2008 debut.

Cards' reliever Zack Zuercher gave up a two-run homer to Casey Myers in the fifth, as Midland broke the game open at 5-0. Tommy Everidge took Zuercher deep in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.

Jonathan Mikrut came out of the Springfield bullpen and couldn't stop the Hounds from adding to their lead, as they got four in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a commanding 12-0 lead. Brian Snyder's three-run blast in the seventh highlighted the frame.

Springfield had just five hits offensively, as three Midland pitchers combined for the shut-out. Starter James Simmons went three scoreless frames, while Ryan Webb (1-0) spun five scoreless innings. Scott Tyler set Springfield down in order in the ninth.

The Cards wrap up the six-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon with a special 12:10pm game. PJ Walters (0-1) will start for the Springfield Cardinals, while Michael Madsen (1-0) goes for the Hounds.
