Arkansas Travelers News Release
Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, Arkansas - The Travs scored in each of the first five innings en route to a 8-3 victory Monday night. Coming into the game, Cardinals starter Cory Rauschenberger (1-3) had dominated the Travelers, posting a 6-1 career record against them. Tonight, the Travs were up to the task, tagging him for eight runs, five earned in just four innings.
Entering the game, Fernando Rodriguez (2-4) was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA at home vs. being 0-3 with a 9.59 ERA on the road. Tonight he drove those splits further apart, earning his second win, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings. The quality start lowered his ERA from 7.47 to 6.85.
After Rodriguez recorded a 1-2-3 first inning, the Travelers got to work against Rauschenberger. In his first start at home since joining the team, Adam Greenberg led off the game with a double to right. Manager Bobby Magallanes called on Hainley Statia to bunt Greenberg over to third. The move paid off when the next batter, Michael Collins, hit a sac fly to left for his 16th RBI of the season.
The Cards momentarily tied the game in the top of the second when a one-out walk to Brandon Yarbrough came around to haunt Rodriguez. After Jose Martinez singled him to third, Mark Shorey drove him home with an RBI single to left.
The Travs reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Rauschenberger got into trouble with a one-out walk of his own to Jordan Czarniecki. Czarniecki moved up to second on a single by Tim Duff and scored on SS Tyler Greene's throwing error. Drew Toussaint grounded the ball to Martinez at second who threw on to Greene to force out Duff at second. Greene tried to throw to first to complete the double play but his throw went into the dugout allowing Czarniecki to score.
The Travs sent nine men to the plate and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach for good. Ben Johnson and Corey Smith walked to start the inning and when LF Shane Robinson failed to field a Czarniecki single cleanly, Johnson came around to score. Toussaint singled on a grounder through the right side to score Smith and Greenberg recorded an RBI with a bases-loaded walk to cap the Traveler scoring.
The Cards added a run in the eighth against reliever Doug Brandt when a Mark Shorey single scored Steven Hill from second.
Even though there were a combined 20 hits, 10 per team, there were plenty of whiffs. Out of all 18 batters in the game, only Jordan Czarniecki did not strike out. There were a total of 21 strikeouts in the game.
Every batter in the Travs lineup recorded a hit with the exception of Corey Smith who went 0-for-2 and scored a run.
Czarniecki reached base in three out of four trips to the plate with two singles and a walk. He also scored three runs.
Rafael Rodriguez was impressive in his first appearance with the Travs, pitching a perfect ninth inning and striking out two.
Time of game was 2:50 and paid attendance was 5,264.
