Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - San Antonio's Stephen Faris had given up 13 runs over six innings in his last two starts. Monday night, he was determined to make amends, and the Hooks played victim.
Faris tossed six innings of shutout ball and drove in San Antonio's first two runs as the Missions blanked the Hooks 4-0 in the opener of this four-game series at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Faris (2-1), who had given up four runs in five innings to the Hooks last Tuesday and a whopping nine runs in one inning in his last start at home, weathered some early trouble to post his best outing of the year. His counterpart, Hooks' starter Brian Bogusevic, had the best opportunities to dent Faris and the scoreboard.
In the second, singles by Chris Johnson and Lou Santangelo gave the Hooks runners at the corners with two out. Bogusevic drilled a 3-1 pitch from Faris toward left, but third baseman Seth Johnston made a stabbing catch to end the inning.
In the fourth, a double by Johnson and an Eli Iorg walk gave Bogusevic a chance with runners at first and second, again with two out. Bogusevic hit a ball toward the gap in right-center, but right fielder Craig Cooper made a running catch to squelch that threat.
Faris, in the meantime, was able to get to Bogusevic - and he did it twice. With two on and two out in the home second, Faris looped a single into right to plate Johnston from second for a 1-0 Missions' lead. In the fourth, Faris drew a walk on four pitches with the bases loaded to force in a run to make it 2-0 San Antonio.
That walk was one of three issued by Bogusevic (0-3) in the fourth and one of a season-high five he doled out during his six innings on the hill. The lefty was charged with three runs on four hits. He did not record a strikeout.
Faris scattered six hits and a walk and he struck out four. Despite his recent troubles, Monday's effort marked the third time this season Faris did not allow a run.
Johnson and Tommy Manzella each had a single and a double in four trips for the Hooks (21-16), who remain 2½ games behind first-place Frisco in the Texas League South.
Sergio Perez (1-0) makes his second start for the Hooks in a rare 11:05 start Tuesday morning. He'll go up against San Antonio's Matt Buschmann (2-2).
