North Little Rock - The Travs lost to the Springfield Cardinals 8-1 in the last game of a three-game series on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Dickey-Stephens Park in front of an announced crowd of 3,675.
Springfield second baseman Jermaine Curtis doubled to right field to start the top of the fifth inning and advanced to third base on Daryl Jones' infield single. Travs first baseman Gabe Jacobo fielded Jones' grounder and looked like he flipped it to Travs' starter Garrett Richards in time for the out at first, but the umpire called Jones safe. Curtis attempted to score on catcher Audry Perez' grounder to first base, but Jacobo threw home in time and got Curtis in a run down.Curtis was tagged out by third baseman Jesus Campos for the first out of the inning.
Jim Rapoport grounded it to the second baseman, but Matt Cusick made a fielding error allowing the ball to reach the outfield and Jones scored from second base to make it a 1-0 Cardinals lead. Shortstop Ryan Jackson singled to load the bases and Matt Adams doubled to right field to score two more runs to give Springfield a three-run lead. After Richards struck out Eric Duncan, third baseman and former Arkansas Razorback Zack Cox picked up his third hit of the game, singling to right field for an RBI and a 4-0 lead.
Richards (12-2, 3.06) got the loss, his first since May 4, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked one. His five innings pitched were the lowest since he pitched five on April 12.
Travs reliever Steven Geltz gave up three consecutive singles loading the bases to start the top of the sixth inning, got a fly out and a strike out, and then Jackson hit a grand slam that just got over the left-field fence for an 8-0 Cardinals lead.
Cardinals' starter and the St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America had a no-hitter until Mike Trout tripled over the center fielder with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Trout scored to make it an 8-1 Travs' deficit on Darwin Perez' ground out to the shortstop.
Miller (7-2, 2.48) got the win giving up one hit and one run in six innings. He struck out four and walked three.
The Cardinals outhit the Travs 15 to 5 and were 6 for 19 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base. The Travs were 0 for 4 with RISP and left four men on in a 2 hour 44 minute game.
