Springfield Cardinals News Release
Little Rock, AR - With each team winning a game in the three-game series, Thursday's rubber match pitted a couple of aces against each other at Dickey-Stephens Park. Shelby Miller, previously 2-0 against the Travelers, started for Springfield against former first round pick Garret Richards, who leads the Texas League in wins.
Springfield threatened in the first inning putting the first two runners on base on a walk and a single, but Matt Adams bounced into a double play and Eric Duncan struck out to end the inning.
After four scoreless innings, the Cardinals would finally get to start Garret Richards. Jermaine Curtis led off the inning with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Daryl Jones. Curtis was then thrown out at the plate on a ground out putting runners at first and second with one out. Jim Rapoport followed by sneaking a ball under the glove of second baseman Matt Cusick scoring Jones from second giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Ryan Jackson then singled to load the bases before Matt Adams doubled off the right field wall scoring two more runs. With two out, Zack Cox singled through the right side to score Jackson putting Springfield in front 4-0.
Richards came out after the 5th throwing just 69 pitches for the Travelers. Steven Geltz came in out of the bullpen in the 6th and immediately allowed three straight singles. After a line out and strikeout, Ryan Jackson blasted a grand slam homerun over the left field wall to give the Cardinals an 8-0 lead.
Shelby Miller had thrown five shut out innings and had not allowed a hit until Mike Trout tripled to deep center field to break up the no-hit bid. Darwin Perez followed with an RBI groundout to put the Travs first run on the board, now trailing 8-1. Miller would finish his outing after the 6th allowing just the one run on one hit while striking out four.
Nick Greenwood provided two scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits and Jorge Rondon threw a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for Shelby Miller.
Springfield will begin a four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers Friday night at 7:05pm. The Cardinals will send right hander Joe Kelly to the mound against recently acquired righty Joe Gardner of the Drillers at ONEOK Field.
The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field Wednesday August 10th for a six game homestand beginning with the San Antonio Missions at 7:07pm. Great tickets are still available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
