Arkansas Travelers News Release
Tulsa, OK - The Tulsa Drillers took advantage of a sloppy stretch in the field to earn a 3-2 victory over the Arkansas Travelers to finish a doubleheader sweep at ONEOK Field on Wednesday. The Travs tied a season-high with three errors with right hander Manny Correa (0-2) the victim on a night where he took the loss in a complete game. Robbie Widlansky homered (2) and collected two base hits for the Travs.
With losses in six of eight games the Travs head into Thursday's series finale with a 8-11 record, while the Drillers move to 10-9.
Correa had an early lead thanks to Widlansky's leadoff home run in the second inning. The lead could have been larger, but Parker Frazier stranded Randal Grichuk at third base after he hit a triple with no outs. Taylor Lindsey and Travis Witherspoon both grounded out before Frazier got Mark Fleury on strikes.
The Drillers got their first base runner when Henry Wrigley hit a one-out single in the second inning. Kiel Roling followed with a smash that kicked off third baseman Kaleb Cowart's foot for an error and Jayson Langfels then dropped a single into right field scoring Wrigley. C.J. Cron cut off the throw at first base and threw wildly to third base attempting to nail Roling. However the error allowed Roling to score with the go-ahead run. A two-out single by Christhian Adames knocked in Langfels for a 3-1 Tulsa lead.
Frazier ended his start by retiring the last eight batters he faced. After he went 3.2 innings allowing one run on three hits, Frazier gave the ball to Cory Riordan. Witherspoon tripled with one out in the fifth inning and scored when Fleury grounded out to bring the Travs within a 3-2 score.
In the top of the sixth inning Drew Heid collected his second single and moved to second base on a hit-and-run groundout. Mike Marbry entered from the pen and Widlansky reached base on a hard single hit at the second baseman. Grichuk though made the third out with a fly ball to right field.
The Travs last gasp came in the seventh against Marbry, who walked Witherspoon with one out. He stole second base before pinch hitter Matt Long flied out. Rolando Gomez fouled out to end the game handing Marbry his first save.
Riordan (2-0) earned the win with two innings of work allowing one run and two base hits. Correa (0-2) pitched the first complete game in the Texas League for the season in a losing effort allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts in six innings.
The series finale is set for Thursday night at ONEOK Field with Lay Batista (0-3, 4.02) on the mound for Arkansas. Tulsa counters with Tim Gustafson (0-1, 10.45). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
