San Antonio Missions News Release

A quiet offense and key defensive miscues contributed to the Missions' 6-1 loss to the RoughRiders Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.

San Antonio's Burch Smith and Frisco's Neil Ramirez matched zeroes early on in the much-anticipated pitching matchup. Neither team had a hit until the fourth, when Smith surrendered a leadoff triple to shortstop Hanser Alberto. Frisco took a 1-0 lead two batters later on an RBI double by Brett Nicholas.

The Missions had a golden opportunity to tie the game in their half of the inning, which began with a Reymond Fuentes walk and a Rico Noel hit by pitch. Everett Williams followed with a single into right that looked like it would tie the game, but right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang gunned down Fuentes at the plate. Inspired by the big play in the field, Ramirez struck out both Tommy Medica and Jake Blackwood to get out of the jam.

Things got worse for Smith and the Missions in the top of the fifth when the RoughRiders used three, two-out hits and two errors to push their lead to 4-0. It was another frustrating outing for Smith (1-2), who lost for the second straight start despite allowing just two earned runs over his five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, San Antonio finally got on the board, trimming their deficit to 4-1 on a two-out, RBI single from second baseman Adam Buschini. Unfortunately for the home crowd of 3,161, that's all the Missions could muster against Ramirez, who improved to 2-0 on the year with five innings of three-hit ball. The right-hander fanned seven batters, tying Springfield's Boone Whiting (4/7) for the most strikeouts by an opposing starter against the Missions this season.

Frisco got a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to cap scoring.

The Missions had more walks (5) than hits (3) in the loss. The three hits were a season low for San Antonio and it was the ninth time this season that the team has scored exactly one run in a game.

The two clubs resume their four-game series Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. San Antonio (8-10) will send RH Matt Andriese (2-0, 1.20) to the hill to face Frisco (11-7) RH Kevin Pucetas (2-1, 2.33).
