'Hounds Rally Comes up Short

April 24, 2013 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Most of Tuesday night's game was played in "less than ideal" conditions, with the wind chill dropping into the 30's by the time the extra innings contest was in the books. When the final out was recorded, the final tally showed 13 runs, 20, hits and eight errors, with Corpus Christi breaking a 6-6 tie in the top of the 10th for a 7-6 win.

The Hooks erased an early 3-0 deficit, tying the game at 3-3 in the fifth on the first of two home runs from George Springer. Corpus Christi held the lead until the ninth, when Michael Fabiaschi's two-out, two-run double pushed the game into extra innings, tied at 6-6.

In the 10th, Paul Smyth walked his first batter of the season (he had struck out 15 batters without a base on balls) and that batter would come around to score the game winning run on a sacrifice bunt, an infield single, and a sacrifice fly.

The game had its bizarre moments, including Miles Head being ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The ejection was unusual only because Head was on second base at the time and was ejected by the first base umpire (in the eighth inning). Ironically, Fabiaschi entered the game as Head's replacement, and went on to deliver the game-tying hit in the ninth.

Kibbles & Bits

- George Springer went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in (along with a stolen base). Houston's first round draft choice in 2011 (University of Connecticut) now leads the Texas League in home runs (6) and RBI (15).

- Former Hook Jake Goebbert went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two doubles against his former club, extending his hit streak to nine games. Goebbert had a pinch hit double Monday night, and is 4-for-6 with a homer and three doubles in the series. Jake was traded from Houston to Oakland this spring in exchange for pitcher (and former San Antonio Mission) Travis Blackley.

- Five Hooks pitchers struck out a combined 17 RockHounds batters in the game. Reliever Patrick Urckfitz struck out the last four batters he faced to close the game, earning the win.

- Frisco regained a share of first place in the South with a 5-1 win at San Antonio. The RoughRiders and RockHounds are both 11-7, with the Hooks just a game back at 10-8. San Antonio trails with an 8-10 record.

- The Hooks and 'Hounds meet Wednesday evening at 6:30 and "Thirsty" Thursday at 7:00, followed by a four game set with the Frisco RoughRiders (Friday-Monday).
