Arkansas Travelers News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS - The Arkansas Travelers split a doubleheader on Saturday night with the Springfield Cardinals to remain tied for third place in the Texas League North. Springfield right hander Trey Hearne (W, 11-3) threw a complete-game four-hitter in the opener to lead the Cards to a 6-0 victory. The Travs rallied for two runs in the fifth inning with Coby Smith and Nate Sutton driving in runs for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
Hearne overshadowed Travs lefty Trevor Reckling (L, 8-7) in his last appearance for the Travs before playing for Team USA in the IBAF World Cup. In tossing the first complete-game and shutout of his career, Hearne allowed just four singles and two walks while striking out three.
Reckling lasted five innings and took the loss allowing two runs on five hits, four walks adding three strikeouts.
The clubs traded scoreless frames until the fourth when Reckling issued a two-out walk to Tyler Henley, and Tony Cruz drove him in with a lined shot off the centerfield fence for an RBI triple.
Reckling was relieved by Bobby Cassevah after allowing a single and a walk to the first two batters of the sixth inning. Cassevah induced a double play off the bat of Cruz, but then Aaron Luna hit a high chop over the mound that Ryan Mount fielded behind second base. The throw to first base bounced into the dugout and Luna was awarded an RBI single knocking home Joe Mather while the error moved him to second base. Colt Sedbrook worked a walk from Cassevah and Jim Rapoport knocked in Luna with an RBI single giving the Cards a 3-0 lead. Shortstop Pete Kozma capped the ballgame with a three-run homer (4) immediately afterwards.
Hearne left eight runners on base and pitched around three errors by his fielders to push his record against the Travelers to 3-0.
GAME TWO
The opening loss was the Travs ninth consecutive in a doubleheader game. They also fell behind in the second game of the evening as Springfield got to starter Mike Anton in the second inning. Activated from the disabled list where he had spent a month nursing a strained hamstring muscle, Anton retired the first two batters of the second inning, then Cruz hit a pop up behind first base that Mount overran as the ball landed inside the line and Cruz ran to second base with a double. Luna then knocked him in with a single to center giving the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Leading off the top of the third, Rapoport tripled over first base and scored when Andrew Brown's fly ball to right field was overrun by Mark Trumbo for an RBI single giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Springfield sent Chuckie Fick to the hill in a spot start and was working on a string of 15.1 scoreless when the Travs got to him in the third inning. Wil Ortiz worked a leadoff walk then advanced to third base when Peter Bourjos grounded a double inside the third-base line. Smith, who finished with two RBI, singled to right field to knock in Smith getting the Travs within a 2-1 score. Bourjos held up at third base, but was stranded when Fick got Sutton to bounce into a double play.
Anton finished strongly and retired the last five men he faced during a four-inning appearance. Barret Browning (W, 2-10) came on for the fifth inning and finished 1.2 innings to earn the win.
Still trailing against Fick the Travs got a leadoff single from Ortiz to begin the fifth inning then a sacrifice bunt by Ivan Contreras to move him to second. Bourjos chopped to the shortstop hole and beat the throw for a single, but Ortiz had to hold at second. Fick was removed in favor of right hander Casey Mulligan, and Smith greeted him with a hard RBI single to center to tie the game and send Bourjos to third base. Sutton lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring Bourjos home with the winning run.
David Herndon (Sv, 9) finished the last 1.1 innings to record his first save of the second half.
Time of game in the opener was 2:10 and the second game was played in 1:58. Attendance for the doubleheader was 6,616.
The Travs and Cardinals are set for a Sunday afternoon tilt beginning at 2:00 p.m. Right hander Jeremy Thorne (4-8, 4.83 at Rancho Cucamonga) is set to make his class AA debut for the Travs while the Cardinals send right hander Lance Lynn (11-4, 2.92).
