Cards and Travs Split on Saturday
August 29, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals and the Arkansas Travelers split a double-header on Saturday night at Dickey-Stephens Park, Springfield's second double-header in two days.
Trey Hearne fired seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 complete-game win in game one, ending the Cards' three-game losing streak. The Travs rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth in game two, coming from behind to salvage a 3-2 win and a split of the double-header.
Hearne allowed just four hits and two walks over seven shut-out innings, picking up just the second complete-game win by a Springfield starter this year.
Leading 1-0 in the sixth inning of game one, the Cards' offense exploded for five runs to take a 6-0 lead. Pete Kozma's three-run homer capped the five-run outburst, his fifth homer of the year.
That was more than enough for Hearne (11-3), who retired the final five hitters he faced to notch his 11th win and tie Lance Lynn for the team-lead.
The Cards took a 2-0 lead in game two, but spot-starter Chuckie Fick got touched for a pair of runs in the fifth, as the Travs came from behind to take the lead for good.
Springfield got RBI hits from Aaron Luna and Andrew Brown to build their 2-0 advantage over Arkansas starter Mike Anton.
The Travs got to Fick for a run in the third and then chased him in the fifth, with two aboard and one out. Casey Mulligan entered with the task of stranding a pair of inherited runners. Mulligan allowed an RBI single to Coby Smith and then a sac fly to Nate Sutton, as Arkansas took a 3-2 advantage.
David Herndon tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for his ninth save of the year.
Fick (1-2) pitched well, but suffered the loss, allowing three runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Springfield (28-33, 66-65) will look to get back on track, sending Lance Lynn to the mound on Sunday afternoon, as he takes on Jeremy Thorn, who will join the Travs tomorrow and make his Texas League debut. Game time is 2pm from Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.
The Cards return to Hammons Field on Tuesday, September 1st, as they open the final home stand of the 2009 regular season. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
