Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Troy Scribner pitched five shutout innings and each Arkansas position player recorded at least one hit as the Travelers turned back Corpus Christi 8-4 Thursday at Whataburger Field before 4,493.
Scribner (3-2) permitted just one hit and struck out three in a 55-pitch, 33-strike performance. The right-hander, traded by Houston to the Angels in April, made three 2014 appearances for the Hooks.
The Travelers (19-28) put together a three-run, four-hit, one-walk attack against Kyle Smith in the first. Eric Aguilera belted his sixth homer, a two-run shot to left, and Jose Briceno had an RBI single.
Arkansas struck again during the second. Chad Hinshaw's fifth round-tripper found the back side of the left-field berm and came on a 1-2 pitch with one away.
The theme continued two frames later, Anthony Phillips' first home run preceded by a Bo Way infield single. Hinshaw walked on four pitches before Cal Towey's triple into the right-field corner for a 7-0 Travelers lead. Two outs later, Andrew Daniel sent Towey homeward by lining a single into left field.
Smith (0-5) surrendered eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over 3 2/3. His pitch count was 71 (43).
Angel Heredia, who whiffed five over 3 1/3 innings, was a stabilizing force out of the bullpen. Michael Freeman contributed two scoreless innings.
Corpus Christi (28-18) averted a shutout and more in the seventh vs. Danny Reynolds. J.D. Davis plated Alex Bregman with a sacrifice fly for the first score; Bregman rapped a lead-off single and raced to third on Derek Fisher's double. Alejandro Garcia powered a two-out, two-run, two-base hit to center.
The Hooks roughed up Eduardo Paredes for their fourth run the next inning, Chan-Jong Moon and Bregman doubling an out apart.
Fisher extended his hitting streak to nine games and Daniel has a seven-game run. Bregman reached base for the 21st straight game.
Friday is Comic Christi Night presented by Radiology Associates. Bud Light Friday Fireworks light up the sky postgame and fans can register for the Texas Lottery Lucky Scratch Ticket Dance-Off.
