Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Teoscar Hernandez drove in two runs and left fielder James Ramsay robbed Frank Schwindel of a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth as Corpus Christi beat Northwest Arkansas 4-2 Friday at Whataburger Field before 5,638.
The Hooks (29-18) are 20-6 this month and find themselves just a game behind division leader Frisco in the Texas League South first-half standings The Naturals stand 21-26.
Trailing 3-2, Schwindel drove a full-count offering from David Paulino deep to left, Ryan O'Hearn aboard via a one-out single. Ramsay made a leaping grab and alertly threw to shortstop Alex Bregman, who doubled up O'Hearn.
Back-to-back singles by Nick Tanielu and Conrad Gregor set the stage for Corpus Christi's eighth-inning insurance, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hernandez.
The Hooks scored a pair of two-out, second-inning runs against Alec Mills. After Northwest Arkansas turned a 5-6-3 double play by shifting to the right side with Gregor at bat, Hernandez plated J.D. Davis (lead-off single) with a liner into center field. Ramsay then delivered an RBI double into the left-field corner.
The visitors responded, Logan Moon's opening double becoming the first Naturals run when Terrance Gore dropped a single into left. Jack Lopez contributed a sacrifice bunt.
That was the only run yielded by Kent Emanuel (1-0) in his 2016 debut, a five-inning start. Corpus Christi's opening day starter last season, Emanuel underwent Tommy John surgery in June. His Friday line: four hits, one walk, and two strikeouts in a 61-pitch, 41-strike outing.
Bregman's fifth-inning RBI single extended Corpus Christi's lead to 3-1, his on-base streak to 22 games, and hitting streak to seven. Bregman's plate appearance was preceded by consecutive singles from Roberto Pena and Carlos Gomez.
Paulino took over for Emanuel and left two Naturals aboard in the sixth. An inning later, Moon tagged the tall right-hander for his second lead-off double of the night and came around to score again on Carlos Garcia's two-out hit.
Mills (1-2) worked six frames and was responsible for nine hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Aaron West notched his fourth save.
Tanielu and Pena own six-game hitting runs for Corpus Christi.
Evan Grills (1-0) draws the Hooks pitching assignment Saturday against another left-hander, Matt Strahm (2-4). Little Joe & La Familia perform in concert postgame and first pitch is 6:05.
