Trashers return from holiday break with fifth straight win

The Danbury Trashers will begin a busy week on Tuesday as they host Adirondack at the Danbury Ice Arena with a handful of wins under their belts as they carry a five-game winning streak into tomorrow nightÂ’s contest.

Unlike last week, the Trashers have a busy slate with four contests including a New YearÂ’s Eve game in Richmond, a New YearÂ’s Night game at home against Richmond and a January 2nd game in Adirondack.

The New YearÂ’s Night game will also be a special evening as the Trashers will introduce their new mascot during the first intermission.

BIG 2ND PERIOD LEADS TRASHERS TO 5TH STRAIGHT WIN!

Danbury turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead with three unanswered goals in the 2nd period as the Trashers defeated Elmira 5-3 on Sunday night at First Arena.

Five different Danbury players scored in the win, but the Jackals opened the scoring with the first of two goals by Nathan Gillies at the 8:28 mark of the first period from Darren VanOene and Bryan Cummings.

Blake Bellefeuille tallied his 8th of the season exactly two minutes later to deadlock the score at 1-1, but Elmira finished the period with a 2-1 lead after Eddy Lowe scored from Greg Koehler and Dean Jackson at the 13:18 mark of the period.

The Trashers then scored three unanswered goals to break the game open as Nicholas Bilotto, Brian Herbert and Jeff Daw scored within a four-minute frame to give Danbury a 4-2 lead. However, the Jackals pulled to within a goal on GilliesÂ’ second of the night at the 12:27 mark of the period.

The lone 3rd period goal was an empty netter from Brent Gretzky at the 19:41 mark from Doug Christensen. The goal was followed with the lone fight of the evening between Bilotto and Jaime Thompson.

Guillaume Lavallee earned the win with a 31 save effort while Greg Hewitt stopped 29 of 33 shots for the Jackals. Danbury has now won five in a row and has improved their mark in the Eastern Division to 22-8-1 (45 points), seven ahead of Adirondack.

In the lone game of the week, Lavallee filled in for Scott Stirling (flu) with a solid 31 save performance in DanburyÂ’s 5-3 win over Elmira on December 26th.

TRASHER TIDBITS

- Danbury Trashers forward John Morlang, who is currently on a call-up with Bridgeport in the AHL, scored his first point of the season for the SoundTigers as he assisted on a goal in their 3-2 loss to Hartford on December 26th. Morlang and Mike Bayrack are still with the Bridgeport organization.

- The Trashers have had four players (Brent Gretzky, Jeff Daw, Bruce Richardson and Mike Bayrack) average more than one point per game over the last ten games with Daw leading the pack with 9-4-13 over that span.

- During their five-game winning streak, Danbury has outscored their opponents by a 22-14 margin, but two of DanburyÂ’s wins came via shootout against Elmira. The Trashers have won their last three games against the Jackals. Danbury is 6-0-1 against Elmira over the last seven games against their Upstate N.Y. rival.

- Guillaume LavalleeÂ’s win on December 26th against Elmira was his first in nearly a month. He had lost his previous two starts on December 4th and 10th after beating Flint with a 34 save performance on November 28th in Danbury.

- Danbury has a 9-2-0 December record despite being outscored 13-7 in the first period of those games. However, the Trashers have utilized the 2nd period to their fullest extent, thoroughly outplaying their opponents on the scoreboard by a 20-7 margin in the 2nd period of those same contests.

DANBURY TRASHERS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW MASCOT AS PART OF TWO HOME GAMES THIS WEEK

DANBURY, CTÂ’The Danbury Trashers, proud members of the United Hockey League have announced that they will unveil their new mascot during the January 1st game against Richmond, it was announced by Team President A.J. Galante.

The Danbury News-Times sponsored a ‘Name the Mascot’ contest that drew over 400 entries. Nine contestants submitted the name that was selected for the mascot, who will be formally introduced following the first period of the Saturday, January 1st game against Richmond at the Danbury Ice Arena.

‘Our mascot will be someone that children of all ages will enjoy,’ said Team President A.J. Galante. ‘We look forward to having our mascot be a part of the team on the ice as well as a goodwill ambassador away from the rink.’

All of the participants who submitted the winning mascotÂ’s name were invited to the January 1st game and one will be awarded with the grand prize of 20 pairs of Danbury Trashers tickets. The runners-up will receive five pairs of tickets.

The Danbury Trashers return home on Tuesday December 28th against Adirondack starting at 7:30pm. Fans who buy a ticket to that game may also show their stub to buy a ticket and get one free to the 7:00pm January 1st game against Richmond. This offer is only available in person at the Danbury Ice Arena. The Trashers will also face Richmond on December 31st at 8:00pm on the road and will visit Adirondack on Sunday January 2nd.
