Trash Pandas Drop Finale to Lookouts 3-2

June 5, 2022 - Southern League (SL)
Rocket City Trash Pandas News Release

The Rocket City Trash Pandas let a late opportunity to take the lead slip away, and it ultimately cost them as the Chattanooga Lookouts walked off for a 3-2 win in the finale of their six-game series at AT&T Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the score tied 2-2 in the eighth, Rocket City loaded the bases on three walks with one out in a bid to jump in front. But Chattanooga reliever Stevie Branche escaped the jam by getting a pop up from Jeremiah Jackson and a fly out from Ryan Aguilar to end the inning.

Trash Pandas reliever Zach Linginfelter kept the game tied with a clean bottom of the eighth. Luis Ledo entered in the ninth and issued a one-out walk to Jacob Hurtubise, who advanced to second on a ground out. A wild pitch moved the winning run to third with two outs. Matt McLain followed with a walk-off single to left, giving the Lookouts the win and a split of the six-game series.

The game began better than it ended for the visitors as Rocket City opened the scoring in the top of the second when Preston Palmeiro singled home Jackson, who reached earlier in the inning with a single of his own.

The Lookouts got the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run to left from Chuckie Robinson off Trash Pandas starter Brent Killam. Chattanooga took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the second when Ivan Johnson walked, advanced to second on an error from Killam, and scored on T.J. Hopkins' RBI single to left.

In both the fourth and fifth, the Trash Pandas put the leadoff man on base only to be quickly erased by a double play ground ball. The trend continued in a different way in the sixth when Aaron Whitefield started with a walk but was caught stealing for the first out. Orlando Martinez followed with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. Jackson then hit a ground ball up the middle that was misplayed by the Chattanooga shortstop, allowing Martinez to come home from second with the tying run.

Killam was in the fourth after falling while trying to field a bunt ground ball. Sean McLaughlin was first out of the bullpen and tossed 1.2 clean frames to keep it a one-run game. Aaron Hernandez was next and pitched a clean sixth. Zach Linginfelter did the same in the seventh to keep the score 2-2.

From there, the Lookouts plated the winning run in the ninth to hand Ledo (L, 3-3) his third loss of the season. Rocket City was held to four hits in the loss, with no player recording more than one hit in the defeat.

The Trash Pandas (30-21) return home to begin a 12-game homestand with a six-game series against the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night. First pitch at Toyota Field is scheduled at 6:35 p.m. Josh Caray will be on the call for 103.9 FM THE UMP and 730 AM SportsRadio. The game will also be televised locally on WAAY-31.6, This TV.

At Tuesday's game, 1,000 kids ages 17 and under will receive a limited-edition Sprocket Toothbrush Holder Bobblehead, presented by Premiere Dental Spa. Tuesday is also Ladies Night, presented by Reeds Jewelers, where ladies can win great prizes and all fans can enjoy $1 off canned wine.
