Barons Outlast Smokies in 7-6 Thriller
June 5, 2022 - Southern League (SL)
Birmingham Barons News Release
In perhaps the most exciting game of the season, the Barons survived a late push by the Smokies in a 7-6 win.
Yoelqui Cespedes brought in the first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. The one run lead quickly ballooned to four after Cespedes cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center field. It was his second four RBI game of the season, and first since April.
D.J. Burt led off the fourth inning with a first pitch homer, his second long ball of the season. After Ian Dawkins was hit by a pitch, Lenyn Sosa smashed a roundtripper of his own. The Venezuelan now has 11 on the year. That put the Barons up 7-0.
Scott Blewett was cruising through three innings. Matt Mervis hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, his third homer in as many games. But Tennessee pieced together five runs on five hits in the fifth inning alone. Blewett allowed four straight singles to start the frame. The fourth came off the bat of Yonathan Perlaza to bring in a run. Perlaza eventually scored on Jake Slaughter's three-run homer. The prior batter was Mervis, who plated Christian Donahue on a sacrifice fly.
That brought the score to 7-6. Blewett recorded three more outs to get through the sixth, and then handed the keys to the bullpen. Taylor Broadway, Edgar Navarro, and Fraser Ellard combined for three scoreless innings. Ellard recorded his second save as a Baron this year.
