Trappers Comeback Falls Short

June 9, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

The Edmonton Trappers scored twice in the top of the ninth inning, but couldn't complete the comeback falling 4-3 to Iowa Cubs Monday night at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines. The loss was only the second for the Trappers so far on this road trip, but it was also the second one-run defeat on the trip. Edmonton falls to 13-20 overall on the road and 3-2 on this trip with the loss. The Trappers drew eight walks in the game and banged out nine hits, but also left 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Only one of the games on this road trip has been decided by more than two runs. The Trappers and Cubs will continue this four-game series on Tuesday night at Sec Taylor Stadium. Edmonton will return home on Friday to begin an eight-game homestand against the Sacramento River Cats.

The two starting pitchers, Edmonton's Sun Woo Kim (5-4) and Iowa's Wilton Chavez (5-3), controlled the game in the early going. Neither club was able to tally a run in the first three innings, but the Cubs finally broke through in the fourth. With two out in the inning Kim issued one of the three walks he surrendered on the night to first basemen Chris Donnels. Third baseman Donny Leon followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot that broke the scoreless tie. Edmonton had a chance to get on the board in the top of the fifth when Peter Bergeron and Luis Figueroa drew back-to-back walks with two out, but Chavez then fought back and struck out Luis Ortiz to end the inning. With the exception of the home run to Leon Kim pitched solidly. He yielded just four hits and walked three, while fanning one in 6.0 innings of work, but was still charged with the loss.

Chavez, who is now undefeated at home with a 5-0 record, also pitched well holding the Trappers scoreless through 6.0 innings. He allowed four hits and four walks, while fanning six en route to the win. Kane Davis took over for the Chavez in the seventh inning and allowed the first Trapper run. Anthony Medrano led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Scott Hodges, Edmonton's only extra-base hit of the night. Pinch-hitter Matt Cepicky then grounded out, allowing Medrano to score. Davis then fanned Bergeron and Figueroa to end the inning. Valentino Pascucci and Randy Knorr drew back-to-back walks with two out in the eighth, but Francis Beltran came on in relief and got Medrano to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice. Bobby Hill hit a solo home run off Edmonton reliever Jose Colon in the bottom of the frame and a single by Beltran plated Trenidad Hubbard with the fourth and final Iowa run. Hodges and Jeremy Ware opened the top of the ninth with consecutive singles and Bergeron followed with a base hit that plated Hodges. Ortiz drew a walk with one out to load the bases and Pascucci drew a base on balls with two down to force Ware home with Edmonton's third run. Beltran then struck out Knorr to end the game and earn his fourth save.
