Tourists Top RiverDogs, 6-5

CHARLESTON, SC - Asheville's Jordan Pacheco smashed his 10th home run of the season as the Tourists topped the RiverDogs, 6-5, in South Atlantic League action Monday in front of 1,715 fans at Asheville's McCormick Field.

With the victory, the Tourists increase their second half record to 7-4 (33-47 overall) while the RiverDogs fall to .500 with a 6-6 second half record (45-37 overall).

Charleston jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Jose Pirela lined a leadoff double to right and scored on Ray Kruml's double to center. With Melky Mesa batting, Kruml stole third and scored on catcher Pacheco's throwing error.

Asheville cut Charleston's lead in half in the bottom of the first when Pacheco smashed his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot over the center field wall to make the score 2-1.

The RiverDogs added a run in the second to make the score 3-1 when Mitch Abeita lined a leadoff single, advanced to second on Neall French's single, scooted to third on a groundout and scored on Pirela's single to left.

The Tourists seized a 6-3 lead in the second when Asheville sent 10 men to the plate, scored five runs, drew four walks, and smacked a pair of RBI singles by Delta Cleary and Kiel Roling.

The RiverDogs sliced into the Toursists' advantage in the third when Mesa cracked a leadoff double to left and advanced to third on a fly out. With a single up the middle, Abeita plated Mesa to make the score 6-4.

Charleston rallied to cut Asheville's lead to 6-5 in the sixth when Abeita reached on an infield single and moved to second on Neal French's single. Following a groundout that advanced the runners into scoring position, Jose Pirela drove in Abeita on a groundout.

Michael Marbry (5-2) earned the win for Asheville after he surrendered one earned run on three hits and one strikeout in 3.0 frames of relief. Then the duo of Kurt Yacko (H, 6) and Adam Jorgenson (SV, 15) shutout the final three full stanzas as they scattered two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Charleston starter Andrew Brackman (1-8) suffered the loss after he tossed 1.0 inning and was charged six earned runs on four hits and four walks in addition to two strikeouts.

RiverDogs relievers Brad Rulon, Edwin Walker and Jonathan Ortiz kept Charleston in the ballgame as they combined to shutout the Tourists over the final seven full stanzas while issuing two hits and striking out eight.

Asheville starter Jonnathan Aristil earned a no-decision after he allowed four earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two in 3.0 innings on the mound.

The RiverDogs amassed 13 hits in defeat led by Corban Joseph and Abeita, who each ratcheted three hits while the Tourists' six hits were collected by a six different Asheville bats.

Charleston hands the ball to Cal State-Fullerton product Cory Arbiso (2-5, 2.87 ERA) in the series finale with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. while Asheville counters with right-hander Parker Frazier (4-6, 5.15 ERA).
