Crawdads five-game winning streak ends against Suns

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads season-high five-game winning streak came to a close with a 10-0 loss against the Hagerstown Suns before 1,901 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night.

RHP Neil Ramirez (0-2) made the start on the mound for the Crawdads (7-4, 40-40) and pitched the first five innings of the contest, surrendering only one earned run (two overall) on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He allowed an unearned run in the top of the third but did not give up a hit until the fifth, when an earned run was plated on a double by DH Travis Reagan and an RBI single by CF Chris Curran.

The Suns (2-10, 33-46) blew the game open with eight runs in the final three innings of the game. RHP Carlos Pimentel pitched a scoreless frame in the sixth, but then gave up three solo homers in the seventh to 2B Steve Lombardozzi, C Derek Norris and SS Steven Souza. Lombardozzi then went yard again with a two-run shot in the eighth, putting Hagerstown ahead, 8-0. RHP Tyler Tufts relieved Pimentel and retired the final out in the eighth, before surrendering three unearned runs in the ninth on three hits, a walk and an error. LHP Yoon-Hee Nam struck out the one batter he faced to get the Crawdads out of the ninth.

DH Mike Hollander and 1B Jared Bolden both collected a pair of hits, while 3B Matt West and SS Leury Garcia added a single apiece. The Crawdads offense scored 42 runs in the last five games during the winning streak, but was kept in check by the Hagerstown pitching staff tonight. RHP Hassan Pena (1-0) started the game for the Suns and tossed five shutout innings with only two hits allowed. LHP Kevin Light dealt the next four scoreless frames before RHP Osvaldo Rodriguez closed the game with a scoreless ninth. Ramirez was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Pena earned the win for Hagerstown, snapping the Suns eight-game losing skid.
