Asheville Tourists News Release
(Asheville, NC) - The Tourists were outhit 13-to-6 Monday night, but took advantage of four walks to score five runs in the second inning, then held on to beat the Riverdogs 6-5. Asheville starter Jonnathan Aristil struggled through three innings, but held the Tourists in the game and was picked up by outstanding work by the bullpen. Michael Marbry earned the victory with three solid innings of relief, allowing just a run on three hits for his fifth win this year.
The Riverdogs scored twice in the top of the first on an RBI double by Ray Kruml and a throwing error by catcher Jordan Pacheco, giving Charleston a 2-0 lead. The Tourists got a solo homerun by Jordan Pacheco in the bottom of the first, his tenth of the year and his second in the past two games, to make it 2-1.
Charleston scored runs in the top of the second and third innings on RBI singles by Jose Pirela in the second and Mitch Abeita in the third.
Asheville came to the plate in the bottom of the second inning trailing by two runs, and they used up the rest of their offense with some help from Charleston starter Andrew Brackman. Brackman walked the first two batters of the inning, then gave up a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. A passed ball allowed one run to score before Brackman walked another batter, Andrew Goff, to reload the bases. Delta Cleary then chopped a base hit into right field, plating Tyler Massey and Ryan Peisel to give Asheville a 4-3 lead. Brackman then allowed another free pass to load the bases back up, prompting a Charleston pitching change.
Brad Rulon came on for the Riverdogs with the bases still loaded and no outs, and almost got out of it. Rulon got Pacheco to pop up to second base for the first out, struck out David Christensen for the second, then got ahead of Kiel Roling with two strikes. But Roling lashed a base hit into left-center, scoring two more Asheville runs to take a 6-3 lead.
The Mitch Abeita single drew Charleston to within 6-4 before Michael Marbry came on for the Tourists. Marbry was solid, allowing a run in the top of the sixth on two seeing-eye singles and two groundouts. Asheville made their 6-5 lead stand up with Kurt Yacko and Adam Jorgenson with strong performances in support of Marbry. Jorgenson allowed a hit but struck out two to earn his 14th save of the season and his 5th of the second half.
The Tourists (7-4) and Riverdogs (6-6) meet for the finale of this four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Asheville will send RHP Parker Frazier (4-6, 5.15) to the mound Tuesday to take on Charleston RHP Cory Arbiso (2-5, 2.87).
