Asheville Tourists News Release
(Charleston, WV) Asheville's four-run ninth inning was just short in a thrilling 10-9 loss in West Virginia on Tuesday night. Asheville battled back from a 10-5 deficit in the ninth and had the bases loaded but could not finish the comeback in the end. West Virginia used an eight-run fifth inning off starter Juan Nicasio to hold on for their 10th consecutive victory. The loss pushes the Tourists lead to just a half game up on the Augusta GreenJackets for first place.
Trailing 10-5 with one out in the ninth inning Jimmy Cesario was hit by a pitch by reliever Duke Welker. Ryan Peisel and Beau Seabury then walked to load the bases and force Welker out of the game. Casey Erikson entered for Welker and got Carlos Martinez to pop up for the second out of the inning.
Scott Robinson followed with an RBI single and Delta Cleary walked with the bases loaded to drive in the second run of the inning. Jordan Pacheco would then smack a single to score two runs and make it a 10-9 game. Kiel Roling walked to load the bases once again but Erickson struck out Mike Zuanich to end the game and move the Tourists losing streak to four games.
Juan Nicasio (7-2) stuck out five batters in the first two innings before getting into trouble in the fourth. West Virginia picked up two runs in the fourth inning and would send 12 batters to the plate in the fifth for an eight run inning to take an 10-4 lead. Nicasio was then removed for Kurt Yacko with runners on and nobody out in the fifth. Yakco tossed two scoreless innings with no hits and four strikeouts. Rex Brothers pitched a flawless eighth inning in his second appearance of the season.
The Tourists took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on Jordan Pacheco's 13th homerun of the season. Asheville added three more in the fourth inning on a Kiel Roling two run homerun, his second of the series and 16th of the year.
In the end West Virginia and their eight-run frame was just too much as the Tourists have now dropped the first two games of this series. Dan Houston (6-8, 3.99) will get the ball in game three on Wednesday from Appalachian Power Park. The Power will counter with Brett Lorin (0-0, 1.93) at 7:05. All the action can be heard online or on the flagship station 1007.FM WRES.
