Greenville, SC - For the second consecutive game, the visiting Asheville Tourists came back late to spoil a potential victory for the Greenville Drive, as a two-run ninth gave the Tourists a 5-4 win in front of 5,224 fans at Fluor Field.
With the bases loaded and in the top of the ninth, a fielder's choice erased the lead runner at the plate and had the Drive (12-12, 50-44) one out away from victory, but Drew Weeks delivered a two-run double to the wall in left off Mario Alcantara (4-2) to give the Tourists the lead.
The Drive made things interesting in the bottom half of the ninth when Mike Meyers singled and Javier Guerra reached on an error, but Josh Michalec recorded the final out to pick up his 21st save.
Jerad McCrummen (4-2) got the win for the Tourists with two scoreless innings of relief.
After two innings, the Drive jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Asheville starter Grahamm Wiest. Yoan Moncada began the first with a single and later scored on a single by Nick Longhi. In the second, Wiest struggled with his control, issuing three walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Bryan Hudson.
The Tourists got back into the game thanks to Shane Hoelscher, as his two-run single off Jalen Beeks tied the game in the fourth.
Rafael Devers got those runs back for the Drive in the fifth with a two-run blast to right-center, his ninth homer of the season.
Hoelscher struck again for Asheville in the eighth, as his solo homer off Alcantara cut the Drive lead to 4-3. He collected three hits and three RBI to pace the Tourists offense.
Devers went 2-5 with the two-run homer to lead the way for Greenville, and Meyers and Francisco Tellez added two hits apiece. Weeks and Yonathan Daza had two hits each for Asheville.
Beeks gave the Drive a quality effort on the mound in a no-decision, allowing just two runs, five hits and one walk over six innings with five strikeouts.
The teams will meet in the series finale on Monday night at 7:05 at Fluor Field. The Drive will send LH Jake Drehoff (1-1, 3.13) to the mound as they look to split the four-game set, and RH Carlos Polanco (5-8, 4.47) takes the ball for the Tourists.
