Daytona Tortugas News Release
Fort Myers, FL - The Daytona Tortugas used a pair of come-from-behind victories to sweep their first doubleheader of the season, winning 4-2 and 2-1, against the Fort Myers Miracle Saturday night at Hammond Stadium. Daytona erased an early 2-0 deficit in the first game, while Taylor Sparks delivered the winning hit in the final inning of game two.
Game One
The Tortugas erased an early 2-0 deficit, scoring four unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings, to take the first game of the twin bill.
With one out in the fourth, Angelo Gumbs doubled and Gavin LaValley singled to put runners on the corners. Sparks followed with his first double of the day, scoring Gumbs to get Daytona on the board. Brian O'Grady followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring LaValley to knot the game at two.
The offense stormed right back in the fifth, courtesy of a Blake Trahan run-scoring triple to drive in Jonathan Reynoso, who reached on an error to begin the inning. Aristides Aquino followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Trahan, doubling up the Tortugas lead, 4-2, and extending his hitting streak to nine games.
RHP Tejay Antone (5-3) picked up the win, as he tossed six solid innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. FSL All-Star RHP Jimmy Herget picked up his ninth save in as many chances to preserve the victory. LHP Randy Rosario (2-5) threw five innings of work, allowed three earned runs, and scattered eight hits in the losing effort.
Game Two
RHP Wendolyn Bautista made his Daytona debut and battled LHP Stephen Gonsalves (5-3) for five innings. Bautista allowed an unearned run in his five innings, while striking out six. The offense got him off the hook in the seventh.
With two outs to work with, Daytona rallied against Gonsalves, who was bidding for his second career complete game. Aquino reached on a throwing error from the third baseman Chris Paul and Gumbs singled to put runners at the corners. Sparks came to the plate and delivered a clutch two-run double inside the third base line scoring both runners to give Daytona a 2-1 lead.
RHP Alex Powers (3-0) picked up the win in relief and RHP Jake Ehret tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his fourth save of the season. Gonsalves tossed a complete game, allowed three hits, and struck out eight in the loss.
Daytona can earn a series win Sunday when they take on Fort Myers in the third game of the series. LHP Ismael Guillon (1-2, 3.63 ERA) will get the start for the Tortugas, while Fort Myers will call upon RHP Randy LeBlanc (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM, with the Chili's pre-game show starting at 3:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: With the pair of wins, it marks the first doubleheader sweep for the Tortugas in 2016. Prior, they split with Dunedin (5/31) and were swept by Lakeland (5/13)...Sparks now leads the team with 30 RBIs, including three on Saturday. He had 54 all of last year... The come-from-behind win in game two was just the second time this year Daytona has won a game after trailing in their final at-bats.
