Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Florida State League announced its mid-season All-Star honorees on Friday, and the Clearwater Threshers will be well represented.
Seven Clearwater Threshers will be headed down to Fort Myers for the year's showcase, headlined by Phillies No. 11 prospect Scott Kingery and No. 14 prospect Carlos Tocci.
Along with Kingery and Tocci, pitchers Elniery Garcia, Thomas Eshelman, and Alexis Rivero, catcher Chace Numata, and infielder Zach Green have all been named to the FSL North squad. The Lakeland Flying Tigers, with eight representatives, are the only team with more.
Kingery, Philadelphia's second-round draft pick out of the University of Arizona in 2015, has hit .275 through 49 games thus far in his first full professional season. The 22-year old leads the Florida State League in doubles with 20, and has swiped 12 bases in 14 attempts.
Tocci is an All-Star for the second-straight year, after the outfielder was named to represent the Lakewood Blue Claws in the South Atlantic League All-Star game in 2015. The 20-year-old is the youngest named to the FSL North roster.
Garcia has emerged as the most consistent starter in a strong Threshers rotation through the first two months, ranking tenth in the FSL with a 2.19 ERA through nine appearances. MLB.com ranks the 21-year-old left-hander as the No. 21 prospect in the Phillies system.
Ranked the No. 15 Phillies prospect by MLB.com, Eshelman was acquired by Philadelphia from Houston along with four others as part of the Ken Giles trade on December 12, 2015. The 21-year-old righty was named the FSL's Pitcher of the Week on April 24th following back-to-back seven-inning starts, in which he permitted just one run on four hits total.
Rivero, a 21-year-old reliever, joined the Threshers on July 14th last year and has emerged as one of the top bullpen arms in the league. A 2015 South Atlantic League All-Star, Rivero has posted a 1.09 ERA in 18 games for Clearwater this year, with the fourth-lowest opponents average (.165) in the FSL.
Numata earns the nod as one of four catchers on the North roster. The switch-hitter batted .294 in April while splitting time with Gabriel Lino behind the plate.
After he was limited to just 26 games due to injury last year, Zach Green is a Florida State League All-Star in 2016 after batting .288 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 45 contests. The corner infielder/DH was named a New York-Penn League All-Star in 2013.
The 55th Florida State League All-Star Game will take place at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers on Saturday, June 18, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
