Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

The Tampa Yankees eked out runs in the first and seventh innings on soft singles, and the Charlotte offense failed to offer a response in a 2-1 loss at Steinbrenner Field.

The first bit of damage came in the opening inning. Chris Pike, who was brilliant overall, walked All-Star selection Miguel Andujar after getting the first two outs of the frame. Matt Snyder poked a liner just past Andrew Velazquez at short to advance Andujar to second, and Thairo Estrada dropped a pop fly in front of Thomas Milone in center to score the first run of the game.

The Stone Crabs clawed back against Yankees starter Will Carter in the fourth. Velazquez singled to left with one out, and All-Star Mac James bounced a base hit through the hole at second to put two on with one out.

Fellow All-Star choice Cade Gotta slammed a double down the left field line to score Velazquez and tie the game, but James was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from first on a brilliant relay throw from Yankees top prospect Jorge Mateo. Gotta was left stranded, leaving the score knotted at 1-1.

That draw lasted until the seventh. Tim Ingram (0-1), added to the roster fewer than two hours before first pitch, picked up the first two outs before allowing another weak single to Mateo. The Yankees shortstop of the future stole second and advanced to third as James' throw went into center field. Abiatal Avelino then dropped a soft liner into center to score Mateo and give the Yankees the lead for good.

Overall, the Yankees picked up nine hits, seven of them faint hits that simply found holes in the defense. Matt Marsh (4-1) picked up the win with two perfect innings of relief, and Dillon McNamara netted his third save of the year in the ninth.

The series continues Saturday night at 6 p.m., as RHP Yonny Chirinos (4-0, 1.95) looks to continue his great run for Charlotte against former Yankees first round pick LHP Ian Clarkin (4-4, 3.62).
