Stone Crabs Snap Yankees Win Streak

After winning seven consecutive games, the Tampa Yankees (35-20) fell to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (29-28), 12-4, on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The T-Yanks allowed a season-high 12 runs on 15 hits as the Stone Crabs pulled even in the series. Both sides combined to make seven errors, leading to eight unearned runs. Tampa tied a season-high with four errors.

Ian Clarkin (L, 4-5) tossed five innings, surrendering six runs (two earned) on six hits. The southpaw walked one, struck out three and tossed 47 of his 72 pitches for strikes.

Tampa took a brief lead in the second. Thairo Estrada reached on an error and later scored on a two-out, RBI single by Bo Thompson.

After Clarkin retired the first six batters he faced, Charlotte sent nine batters to the plate in the third.

Three straight singles loaded the bases and Riley Unroe reached on a throwing error by Thompson at first, allowing two runs to score. Following a sacrifice bunt, another run crossed on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, a throwing error by shortstop Jorge Mateo allowed another run to score, giving the Stone Crabs a 4-1 lead.

A couple of more errors plagued Tampa in the fifth. With one out, Mac James singled and Cade Gotta reached as a ball rolled by Miguel Andujar at third. James scored on the play as Jake Skole made an errant throw in from left. One out later, Bralin Jackson hit an RBI, ground-rule double.

RHP Garbiel Encinas entered in the sixth and allowed two more Charlotte runs. Christian Toribio hit a solo home run to left with one out. Later, Encinas walked the bases loaded and Alec Sole singled in a run, giving the Stone Crabs an 8-1 advantage.

Andujar launched a triple to the wall in left-center with one out in the sixth and scored on a passed ball for the second Yankee run. Charlotte answered with an RBI single by Unroe in the seventh off LHP Jonny Drozd.

Yonny Chirinos (W, 5-0) held the Yankees to two unearned runs on five hits in six innings, striking out four. The right-hander dealt 51 of his 65 pitches for strikes in his sixth consecutive quality start.

Tampa got to within five thanks to a pair of Stone Crab errors in the eighth.

Austin Aune hit a two-out single and Estrada reached on an errant throw by shortstop Andrwe Velazquez. Aune then scored on a throwing error by LHP Jose Alvarado, allowing Abiatal Avelino to reach. A walk by Skole loaded the bases and Alvarado walked Thompson, forcing in a run before stranding the bases loaded.

In the ninth, RHP Jordan Foley allowed the first two batters to reach and Unroe issued the dagger with a three-run home run to right.

Thompson (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI) recorded his second multi-RBI game. Aune (1-for-5, R) extended his hitting streak to nine games. Andujar (1-for-5, 3B, R) hit his second triple. Estrada (0-for-4, 2 R) reached twice on errors and snapped his hitting streak at eight.

The series continues on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when RHP Chance Adams (4-0, 3.14 ERA) makes his 11th start of the season for Tampa. RHP Henry Centeno (0-1, 7.36 ERA) is slated to start for Charlotte.
