Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Tortugas stranded the tying run 90-feet away on Thursday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. They Tortugas were down to their final out in both the bottom of the ninth and tenth before forcing an extra frame, but they were unable to come through again in the eleventh.
The series opener with the Fort Myers Miracle lasted 3:51 and featured 17 combined runs, 24 combined hits, and 9 combined errors.
Daytona loaded up the bases with no outs in the last of the second before taking the lead. Stuart Fairchild drove in Bruce Yari for the first run on a sacrifice fly. Brantley Bell moved from second to third on the play, and scored on a Malik Collymore RBI groundout.
The Tortugas doubled their lead in the third. Randy Ventura and Taylor Trammell led off the inning by reaching on back-to-back infield singles. On Trammell's hit, Ventura advanced to third on a throwing error. Ventura scored on a Tyler Stephenson groundout to make it 3-0 and Trammell scored on a Yari single to make it 4-0.
Daytona went up 5-0 in the fourth. Collymore reached with one out on a two-base throwing error by the Miracle shortstop Royce Lewis and came around to score from second on the next play, when Alberti Chavez reached on an error from second basemen Brandon Lopez.
Fort Myers got on the scoreboard for the first time in the sixth. Taylor Grzelakowski reached on a one-out single, then moved first-to-third on back-to-back wild pitches thrown by RHP Tejay Antone. Grzelakowski scored from third on a Alex Kirilloff sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 and chase Antone from the game.
The Miracles scored a second run in the eighth. Grzelakowski reached on a one-out double off of RHP Michael Byrne and scored from second on a single from Kirilloff. After Byrne recorded the second out, he walked back-to-back hitters to load up the bases. He was then pulled for Ryan Hendrix, who came on and struck out Mark Contreras on three pitches to strand the bases loaded and end the threat.
The Tortugas took a 5-2 lead into the final inning before the Miracle sent nine men to the plate and scored four times on five hits off of Hendrix to take the lead. With Lewis standing on second and two-away, Grzelakowski hit an RBI single to extend the game. Kirilloff followed that up by singling to put the tying run on first base. Three pitches later Rodriguez hit a three-run homerun to give Fort Myers a 6-5 advantage, their first lead of the night.
Daytona loaded up the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning and were down to their final out before Bell delivered by hitting a single to right to score Ventura and tie the game at six. Stephenson tried to score on the play as well, but Contreras threw him out at the plate from right field to send the game to extras.
In the top of the tenth, Fort Myers retook the lead. Stephenson picked-off the placed runner Contreras at second base for the first out. Aaron Whitefield then hit a pop up to Ventura at second, that Ventura dropped and turned into a two-base error. Whitefield came into score after Collymore dropped a fly ball in right field off the bat of Lewis, putting the Miracle back up 7-6. Lewis ended up at third on the play, and came into score on a Grzelakowski RBI single to go up 8-6.
The Tortugas would come through again in the last of the tenth. Ibandel Isabel reached on a fielder's choice then came into score on a two-out, two-run homerun off the bat of Collymore on the first pitch from RHP Ryan Mason to tie the game at eight.
Fort Myers took the lead back in the eleventh. The Miracle loaded up the bases with no outs off of LHP Ty Boyles. Contreras then drove in the winning run when he reached on an error committed by Isabel at first. The Mircale still threatened in the inning, but Boyles induced back-to-back groundouts, the second being an inning ending double play, to end the threat.
In the bottom half, the Totugas got the placed runner to third with less than two outs, but RHP Colton Davis struck out Trammell and got Stephenson to fly out to center to end the game.
Mason (8-3) earned the win in relief. He allowed three runs on three hits in two innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Boyles (3-7) is handed the loss. He walked a batter and allowed the placed runner to score in the eleventh. Davis earned his first save after tossing a perfect final frame.
The series will continue Wednesday with LHP Wennington Romero (8-5, 4.13) scheduled to start for Daytona. Romero will be matched up against Brusdar Graterol (1-2, 6.20).
First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
