Clearwater Threshers News Release

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Threshers battled through a back-and-forth contest early on, and pulled out a 6-4 win in a rain-shorted contest against the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Publix Field on Friday night.

Jose Pujols finished 2-for-3 with a two-run triple and three runs scored, while Luke Williams finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. The game was called after five and a half innings due to rain.

Clearwater (21-13) (53-49) struck first against the league's ERA leader Spenser Watkins, as Arquimedes Gamboa led off with a walk, and Mickey Moniak's single to left-center set up an early threat.

With one down, Pujols crushed a triple to the warning track in center, bringing home Gamboa and Moniak to boost the Threshers up, 2-0. Kyle Martin's swinging-bunt dribbler toward third scored Pujols to make it 3-0.

Lakeland (19-14) (55-48) answered with a pair of its own in the bottom half. Luke Burch led off with a single, and Daniel Pinero doubled. Adonis Medina induced a pop out and a strikeout, but Troy Montgomery followed with a double to right to plate two and bring the lead down to one.

The Flying Tigers pulled even in the second, when AJ Simcox tripled to left and Jose Azocar singled through the left side, knotting the game up at three.

Clearwater bounced back to retake the advantage against Watkins (7-4) in the third, when Pujols worked a one-out walk, and Williams cracked a double to the left-centerfield gap to score Pujols and put Clearwater back on top, 4-3. Lakeland again pulled even, when Simcox's second triple of the night scored Cole Peterson in the bottom of the third.

The Threshers took the lead for good in the fifth.

Pujols lined a base hit to left with one out, and Williams followed with a double inside the third base line. Martin lofted a deep fly to center for a sacrifice, bringing home Pujols to edge the Threshers back in front, 5-4.

The Threshers grabbed their sixth run of the night in the sixth facing reliever Eduardo Jimenez. Gamboa singled to center with two outs, and Moniak drew a walk. Edgar Cabral followed with a sinking liner to left for a single, scoring Gamboa to extend it to 6-4.

Medina (9-3) settled in, retiring the final seven he faced. The game entered a delay midway through the sixth, and would not be resumed.

Game three of the series will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, as Andrew Brown will make his Clearwater debut against Anthony Castro. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
