PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Charlotte Stone Crabs shut out the St. Lucie Mets 6-0 on Friday at First Data Field.
Brendan McKay, the No. 4 overall draft pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017, went 2 for 4 with a pair two-run home runs. McKay, a two-way player, was the designated hitter. He started against the Mets on Thursday and threw three scoreless innings.
Blake Bivens was the Crabs starter on Friday and he blanked the Mets over seven innings while throwing just 72 pitches. He scattered three hits and walked one. Bivens recorded five strikeouts and earned his sixth win.
The Mets mustered only four hits. One was a double by Mike Paez that extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.
Austin McGeorge worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Fellow reliever Thomas McIraith allowed a solo home run to Jake Fraley in 3.1 innings of solid work.
Fraley put the Stone Crabs up 1-0 with a sac fly in the second inning.
McKay hit his first two-run homer off of Mets starter Blake Taylor in the third inning to put Charlotte ahead 3-0.
McKay crushed another two-run shot in the fourth inning to make it 5-0.
Fraley's home run in the fifth capped the scoring.
The Mets were shut out for the 12th time this year.
The Mets (13-20, 40-60) and Stone Crabs (18-14, 52-47) play the third game of their series at First Data Field on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
