Down East Wood Ducks News Release

KINSTON, NC - The Wood Ducks used a complete effort from all facets of the game on Monday night to earn a 5-1 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash. Down East never trailed as well thanks to Anderson Tejeda's two-run blast in the first inning.

Christian Torres tied a career-high with six innings pitched in only his eighth start of his career. He struck out five and only allowed five hits on his night, while also leaving five runners on base.

Tejeda's homer to straightaway center exited the bat at 105 MPH for his first round-tripper of the season. It came on the fourth pitch of the game after LeDarious Clark led off with a double.

Winston-Salem responded in the third when Alex Call connected on his first homer of the year to left field. The Woodies avoided the shutdown inning in the bottom of the frame by bringing home a run on a double play ball.

Torres found his grove for the fourth and fifth innings. He faced the minimum for the next two frames, and left two runners stranded with a strikeout of Yeyson Yrrizarri in the sixth.

Down East formed a two-out rally with Josh Altmann in the bottom of the sixth. He stole second base on starter Dane Dunning, then scored on Blaine Prescott's two-strike single up the middle. The Woodies added an unearned run in the seventh when Tejeda scored from second base on an errant pickoff throw from the catcher.

The bullpen stood tall for the final three innings with Jacob Lemoine and Jacob Shortslef answering the call. Lemoine tossed his first hold of the year over two innings of scoreless work and three strikeouts. Shortslef finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth and a pair of strikeouts to up his total to 12, leading the bullpen arms.

The DEWDs move to one game back of the Dash for first place in the southern division and look to take the series tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Emerson Martinez will make his first home start of the 2018 season as he faces lefty Bernardo Flores.
