Winston-Salem Dash News Release

KINSTON, N.C. - Dash outfielder Alex Call hit his first High-A homer on Monday night, but the Down East Wood Ducks led the entire game en route to a 5-1 victory over Winston-Salem in the series opener at Grainger Stadium.

Call, who was a third-round selection by the White Sox in 2016, blasted a one-out, solo shot to left against Wood Ducks starter Christian Torres (1-1) in the third inning to make it a 2-1 contest. The former Ball State star has now registered a hit in three of his last four starts.

However, that would be all the offense for Winston-Salem (7-5), as the Wood Ducks (6-6) jumped on Dash starter Dane Dunning (1-1) in the first inning. Following a LeDarious Clark leadoff double, Anderson Tejeda stroked a two-run homer to center to put Down East ahead 2-0.

After Call's blast in the third cut the deficit to one, the Wood Ducks added a run in the bottom of the frame. Leody Taveras doubled to start the inning, and Preston Scott followed with a single. While Charles Leblanc bounced into a double play, Taveras came into score to push the lead back to two.

Down East would plate its final run against Dunning in the sixth, as Blaine Prescott brought home Josh Altmann on an RBI single. Dunning, who is the sixth-best prospect in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline, went six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out seven. The Wood Ducks capped the scoring with an unearned run against Mike Morrison in the seventh.

Torres tied his career-high with six innings of work in the winning effort for Down East, allowing five hits and one run while walking two and striking out five. Jacob Lemoine and Jacob Shortslef combined to throw three scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Woodies.

Winston-Salem will look to rebound on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Down East Wood Ducks at Grainger Stadium. Left-hander Bernardo Flores (1-0, 3.00 ERA) takes the hill against Woodies' right-hander Emerson Martinez (1-1, 0.90 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can catch all the action at wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.

Following the team's three-game series in Kinston, the Dash return home to BB&T Ballpark for a four-game series against the Salem Red Sox from April 19-22. The homestand opener will be a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday, with select beers available for $1 through the seventh inning. Other Thursday promotions include a Yoga(mmunity) and Pups in the Park outing. The rest of the four-game set features a postgame fireworks show on Friday and a Lowes Foods Family Sunday. Meanwhile, kids can run the bases after each weekend game, presented by New Balance Winston-Salem. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
