Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX February 3- The Reno Bighorns continued their road trip through Texas Wednesday night splitting the two-game series with the Austin Toros who outscored the Bighorns, 115-103. Malik Hairston led the Toros with 23 points and seven boards.
The Bighorns picked up where they left off last night, outscoring the Toros 34-23 in the first quarter. Though the Bighorns had fewer shots in the quarter (20) than the Toros (24), they were able to convert on 14 attempts while the Toros were successful on only nine shots.
It was a different story in the second quarter, where Lewis Clinch had 10 of his 17 points on the night. With 9:36 left in the quarter, Roderick Riley's slam dunk created a momentum shift for the Toros, who continued to go on a 12-2 run, to tie it up at 40. Reno held the lead at halftime, 55-52.
Despite Reno leading by as many as 11 at one point in the third quarter, the Toros were able to fight back throughout the quarter and finish the quarter down by six, 80-74. Clinch scored the final five points in the quarter with less than a minute to go.
The momentum shifted back in the Toros favor at the start of the fourth quarter, as they outscored the Bighorns 18-6 in the first five minutes of the quarter. Justin Bowen's layup tied it at 92. Both teams battled back and forth within a basket of each other, until the Toros were able to pull away with the win as they passed the century mark.
All nine of Reno's players scored, with all five starters scoring in double digits: Desmon Farmer (23), Will Blalock (19), Mo Charlo (17), Dough Thomas and Rod Benson at 12.
Justin Bowen bounced back from last night's game with a double-double (16 points and 11 rebounds). Five other Toros' players scored in double figures: Hairston (23), Curtis Jerrells (21), Clinch (17), Eddie Basden (13), and Alonzo Gee (10).
The Reno Bighorns (11-15) will head south to Rio Grande Valley to face the Vipers Saturday at 5:30 CST.
The Toros (16-11) begin their six-game road trip Saturday in Springfield at 6:00 CST. To follow the Toros on the road visit www.austintoros.com to catch the games live on Futurecast.
