New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Feb. 3, 2010 - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds rebounded from yesterday's sluggish performance to knock off the Western Conference leading Rio Grande Valley Vipers 123-114 on Wednesday night. Carlos Powell and Antoine Agudio combined to score 51 points for Albuquerque, helping the team improve its season record against the Vipers to 3-4.
The Vipers started the game much like they finished Tuesday morning's contest, and led 37-27 at the end of the first quarter.
Albuquerque came out aggressively in the second, and outscored Rio Grande Valley 38-30 in the quarter to close the gap to two at the break. Powell led the way for the T-Birds with 13 points in the first half.
Agudio came out looking for his shot in the third, and scored 11 points in the first six minutes of the period to put the T-Birds in the lead. Albuquerque led 88-82 after a Shane Edwards layup with 3:03 to play in the quarter, and pushed the lead to 10 two minutes later after a pair of free throws from Tony Danridge (96-86).
The Thunderbirds lead was eight heading into the fourth quarter, thanks largely to a combined 18 third quarter points from Agudio and Edwards.
The T-Birds led 110-96 with 5:40 to play in the game, using tenacious defense to hold Rio Grande Valley to just eight points through the first six minutes of the quarter. Albuquerque went on to outscore the Vipers 27 to 26 in the period, capping the nine point win with a Tony Danridge alley-oop in the final seconds.
Powell led the T-Birds in scoring with 28 points. Agudio added 23, while Edwards (17), Kris Collins (15) and Jason Horton (10) also scored in double figures for Albuquerque.
Kurt Looby showcased his full repertoire with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks for the T-Birds.
Rio Grande Valley's Jermaine Taylor led all scorers with 32 points. Mike Harris added 26 for the Vipers.
Albuquerque shot 49.4% from the field, while Rio Grande Valley connected on 47.7% of its shots. The game featured nine ties and six lead changes.
