Brockton Rox News Release
Worcester, Mass. - Rox 1B Melvin Falu mashed a grand slam in the eighth inning, but it was not enough for Brockton as they dropped the series finale to the Worcester Tornadoes, 12-5, on Saturday night at Hanover Insurance Park. Worcester took two of three from the Rox and evened the season series at 5-5.
The Tornadoes (16-25) began the scoring in the second inning on a lead-off solo home run by DH Gordie Gronkowski. Worcester added two more in the third on RBI singles by 1B Chris Colabello and SS Mark Minicozzi. 2B Mike Baillargeon smacked a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning to make it 4-0 Worcester.
The game was busted wide open by Worcester in the seventh inning when they plated eight runs on six hits. Colabello knocked his fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot, and C Alex Trezza added a two-run long ball. The Tornadoes led 12-0 after seven innings.
The Rox (23-17) finally got onto the scoreboard in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk drawn by SS Dominic Ramos which was followed up by Falu's grand slam. Falu now has seven home runs for the season, and has driven in 29 runs.
Worcester received a solid outing from RHP Chris Farley (4-2) as he picked up the win, allowing four runs on just two hits over seven innings. He added seven strikeouts, but walked a season-high seven and threw 116 pitches (56 strikes).
RHP Buster Lussier (1-3), who dropped the decision, pitched only four innings as he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. He surrendered four runs and eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Falu was the only Rox batter with two hits in the game. Worcester received multiple-hit games from Colabello, Gronkowski, Minicozzi, Trezza and Baillargeon.
The Rox return home on Sunday to Brockton to begin a three-game series with the Pittsfield Colonials. Starting at 4:05 p.m., the two teams will wrap-up their suspended game from June 23, in which the Rox lead 13-9 with one out in the Top of the 9th. The regularly-scheduled nine-inning game will begin approximately 20 minutes after with Rox LHP Mike Wlodarczyk (6-1) on the mound.
