Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Augusta, N.J. - July 10, 2010 - First baseman Kris Sanchez launched a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough for the Skyhawks to overcome an eight-run, late-inning deficit in their 10-7 loss to the Pittsfield Colonials at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park on Saturday.

Sussex starter Mike Vicaro lost his first start at home, allowing six runs (five earned) in four-plus innings on eight hits and five walks. His counterpart, Pittsfield's Kyle Zaleski, lasted six innings and surrendered two runs on six hits and one walk while fanning six. Zaleski picked up the win, and David Wasylak earned the save by pitching the final three innings of the game and holding onto the lead despite Sanchez's late blast.

Pittsfield right fielder Daniel Carte made history in the fifth inning by breaking the Can-Am League's all-time record for consecutive games with a hit. His two-run double extended his hitting streak to 30 straight games.

Sussex relievers Donald Jordat and Matt Salvato pitched one perfect inning apiece in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Left fielder Kraig Binick, center fielder Carl Loadenthal and second baseman Joe Persichina each notched one RBI in the loss.

The Skyhawks are off on Sunday and travel to Yogi Berra Stadium for a three-game, road series with the Jackals starting Monday. The team returns home Thursday to welcome the Worcester Tornadoes to CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park for their first visit of the 2010 season. Thursday is Post-work Party Day at the stadium and will feature $2 beer specials on domestic drafts. First pitch is scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
