Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - A five-run second inning was more than enough for the Tornadoes, as Shaun McNamara and Eddie Pena were strong on the mound in downing the Ottawa Rapidz, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
The Tornadoes rode 10 hits through the first three innings to the 6-0 lead. The Ottawa staff came up big the rest of the way, failing to allow a Worcester hit over the final five innings while its offense rallied with four runs. But the combination of McNamara and Pena bore down to hold onto the two-run victory.
B.J. Weed had his second-straight strong performance, finishing 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Omar Pena and Mike MacMillan also finished 2-for-4 with one run apiece. McNamara pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits, one walk, and four strikeouts, good for his first win of the season. Pena pitched two hitless innings for his first save.
Weed set the table with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning. After Chris Colabello doubled, Alex Trezza drove him in with a single to center for the 1-0 lead.
Pena started the second-inning rally with a leadoff double, reached third on a wild pitch, and scored when the third strike to Justin Edwards got past catcher Kyle Geiger. Then for the second-consecutive night, MacMillan bunted his way on base, advancing Edwards, who reached on the strikeout, to second. Weed followed with his second double in as many innings (and fourth extra-base hit in his last five at bats), scoring both runners for the 4-0 lead. Base hits by Scott Grimes and Chuck Jeroloman scored the Tornadoes' fifth and sixth runs.
McNamara continued his strong outing while Ottawa's Adam Hawes settled down, putting up zeroes through the middle innings. The Rapidz made it interesting in the sixth when they converted three hits and an error into four runs and the 6-4 score. An error to Edwards opened up the flood gates. After Geiger and Felix Escalona singled, Jose Salas cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. A bobble by Francisco Caraballo allowed the third run to score while letting Salas reach third base. He crossed the plate on a pass ball for the 6-4 final.
Worcester enjoys Monday off before starting a three-game series with state rival Brockton on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. Thursday is $1 hot dog night!
