American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(Nashua, N.H., June 15, 2008) The Nashua Pride scored a season high 13 runs against the Quebec Capitales, highlighted by a ten run eighth inning, and avoided a series sweep with a 13-9 victory in front of 2028 fans at Historic Holman Stadium on Sunday.
Nashua sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and scored ten runs, on six hits, four walks, and a hit batsman in the frame. Every hitter to step to the plate in the inning had either an RBI or a run scored for Nashua in their largest offensive output in a single inning this season. The Pride were only three runs shy of tying the Can-Am League record for most runs in an inning, 13, set by Quebec in 2007.
We got some big hits," said Pride manager Rick Miller post game. "It gets a little bit contagious. Its great for our confidence too, we've got some guys that are struggling, so it's good for the team in morale."
Pride right fielder Jeremy Pickrel led Nashua offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Other multiple hitters for the Pride included first baseman Bryan Duplissie who was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, left fielder Sammy Rosario went 2-for-4 with two RBI, catcher Chris Torres was also 2-for-4 with an RBI, and third baseman Aregenis Tavarez, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
"Its good for us because this team (Quebec) is the best in the league right now," said Tavarez. "Their pitchers are good, and everything is going for this team right now. Every time we beat one of the better teams its good for us. We know we can compete with them."
Nashua also received RBI from shortstop Jack Joffrion (2), designated hitter Dennis Abreu (1), and center fielder Vinny Pennell (1). Every player in the Pride line-up scored at least one run in the game. All but one hitter in the line-up tallied an RBI.
Pride starting pitcher Nicolas Suero figured in with a no-decision, pitching five-plus innings, allowing nine runs (three earned), on eleven hits, three walks and one strike out. Reliever Adam Piechowski picked up his second win of the season, pitching one inning of scoreless relief.
Capitales starting pitcher Eric Cyr also factored in with a no-decision, having come out of the game with a 9-3 lead. Cyr lasted a solid seven innings, allowing three runs, on nine hits, no walks and three strike outs. His efforts were wasted when relievers Felix Arellan and Ivan Blanco were rocked by the Pride in the eighth. Arellan allowed five runs, on one hit, three walks, and a hit batter in one-third of an inning. Blanco also gave up five runs, on five hits, and one walk in two-thirds of an inning.
"Sometimes you just need a change of scenery," said Miller. "Tonight the change in scenery was the change in pitcher. Once we got the momentum going the damn burst and they couldn't stop the flow."
The Pride will have Monday off before heading to Augusta, New Jersey, for a three game series versus the Sussex Skyhawks beginning on Tuesday. Jarrett Stawarz (1-0) is expected to make his second start of the season for Nashua.
The Nashua Pride Professional Baseball Club, entering its 11th season, provides a fun, affordable, community-based and fan-friendly source of sports entertainment. The 2007 Can-Am League Champions will be participating in its third year of play in the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball.
