Rapidz fall in last game of trip

(WORCESTER, MA) June15, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz was unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped a 6-4 decision against the Worcester Tornadoes in the last game of their six-game road trip.

The Tornadoes scored early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on three hits. They continued pounding Rapidz starter Adam Hawes (1-3) in the bottom of the second, bringing 11 batters to the plate. They scored five runs on six hits, one of them being a two-run double off the centre field wall by B.J. Weed, missing a homerun by only a few feet.

The Rapidz responded by scoring four times in the sixth, when the Tornadoes committed two errors and one passed ball. Jose Salas hit a two-run double, one of the three hits for the Rapidz in the inning. Felix Escalona scored the third run of the inning when the leftfielder bobbled the ball. Salas reached third on the play, before scoring on a passed ball charged to catcher Alex Trezza.

Hawes allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and one walk in five innings on the mound, while striking out seven for the Rapidz. Worcester starter Shaun McNamara (1-2) pitched seven solid inning to earn his first win of the season allowing four runs, only one earned, eight hits, one walk, while striking out four. Eddie Pena pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.

The Rapidz are now heading back home, where they will host their Canadian rivals, the Quebec City Capitales in an exciting three-game series starting on Monday, June 16 at 7:05pm. Érick Nadon (1-1, 2.45 ERA) will get the start for Quebec City, facing Orlando Trias (0-3, 6.75 ERA) for the Rapidz. Monday's game will feature the « Do it for Dad » promotion. Dads of all ages will be admitted for free. The Rapidz will donate $1 to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (ORCF) for every person wearing blue or a "Do it for Dad" race bib attending that game.
