New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The Jackals completed a three-game series sweep against the Sussex Skyhawks on Sunday afternoon, winning both games of a doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 1-0 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Ramon Nivar drove in four runs to lead the Jackals to a win in the afternoon contest, while Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik (2-2) allowed just three hits over six shutout innings in the nightcap as New Jersey improved its season record to 11-12.

In game one, New Jersey's Juan Done (3-2) allowed three runs on eight hits over seven inning to pick up his third win of the season as the Jackals defeated the Sussex Skyhawks 7-4 in the continuation of last night's suspended game. Aaron Tressler and Edward Roberts started for the Jackals and Skyhawks on Saturday evening, but neither returned to the mound on Sunday afternoon after a sudden downpour left the field unplayable last night.

New Jersey opened up the game one scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Chris Kelly singled home second baseman Marcus Sanders, who had walked, to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead. Following a double by first baseman Juan Tejeda, a two-run single by left fielder Ramon Nivar put the Jackals up 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Kelly led off with a home run to extend the New Jersey lead to 4-0. The homer was Kelly's third in as many games.

In the top of the sixth inning, four consecutive singles, including an RBI base knock by right fielder Jorge Moreno and a two-run double off the bat of designated hitter Walter Young, pulled Sussex within one at 4-3.

New Jersey put the game out of reach with a three-run bottom of the seventh. Sanders and right fielder Luke Allen drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. Tejeda then singled home Sanders to make it 5-3 before a two-run double by Nivar extended the Jackals lead to 7-3.

Sussex plated a run in the top of the ninth when left fielder Alex Frazier scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jay Yaconetti. That would cap the scoring at 7-4 as reliever Tom Atlee induced catcher Matt Hackney to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Roberts (0-3) took the loss despite facing just two batters. The right-hander pitched just a third of an inning but allowed a walk to Sanders before the skies opened up on Saturday night. Sanders crossed the plate when the game continued for the first run of the contest. Craig Snipp took the hill for Sussex on Sunday afternoon, but didn't factor in the decision.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Jackals broke a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning as they went on to win by a score of 1-0 in the seven-inning affair.

With one out in the sixth, Sanders doubled before advancing to third on a wild pitch. He crossed the plate when Allen lifted a fly ball to right field to drive home the winning run.

In the pitchers duel, Pavlik struck out six batters to earn the win while Sussex starter Matt Salvato (1-1) was tagged with the tough-luck loss. Salvato surrendered just three hits while striking out five and walking one.

The Jackals enjoy an off day tomorrow before beginning a three game series against the Atlantic City Surf on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey sends Aaron Tressler to the hill on Tuesday, followed by Ryan Pacyna on Wednesday night and Michael Vicaro on Thursday evening. If you can't make it out to the game, you can catch every inning of action via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning ten minutes prior to the first pitch.
