Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- The offensive and defensive struggles continued for the Tornadoes, as two more errors led to three more unearned runs and Worcester scored just one run for the third straight night in falling, 6-1, to the North Shore Spirit on Wednesday night.
For the second straight night, the Spirit took advantage of costly Worcester miscues to jump out to an early lead. B.J. Weed led off the game with a bloop double to left, was sacrificed to third and scored on a Vic Davilla sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The Spirit added one more in the 1st on a Mike MacMillan fielding error, then scored two more unearned runs in the 2nd inning when MacMillan dropped a throw to third on a stolen base attempt by Carlos Rodriguez.. That set up an RBI groundout for B.J. Weed and a Gary Roche RBI single that put North Shore up 4-0 after two innings.
The Tornadoes scored their only run of the game in the 3rd, when MacMillan doubled with two outs and then came home on a Patrick Perry RBI single to center that made it 4-1. Perry has now driven in 14 runs in his last 14 games, including two of the three runs that Worcester has scored in the series. The Spirit added insurance runs on solo home runs by Alex Trezza off Eddie Pena in the 7th and Vic Davilla off John Birtwell in the 9th to provide the final margin.
Dennis Robinson (1-2), making his first start of the season, tossed six strong innings for the win and Junior Guerrero allowed just one earned run in six solid innings, but was the hard-luck loser. The four-game losing streak matches the longest of the year for Worcester and the team is two games below .500 for the first time since June 7th when they were 6-8. Davilla has knocked in at least two runs in each of the three games of the series, and 8 RBIs total. The Worcester offense has produced three runs in their last 37 innings. The Tornadoes will try to right the ship and salvage one game of their four-game series with the Spirit on Thursday night when they send righty Reid Willett to the mound opposite North Shore righty Gary Galvez. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
