Brockton Rox News Release

Atlantic City, NJ (July 18, 2007) --SS Fredy De La Cruz had three hits, two RBI, and a run scored and the Rox pitching staff limited the Atlantic City Surf to one run on three hits as the Rox ended a three-game skid with a 3-1 victory over the Surf in Atlantic City, NJ. While the Rox allowed 41 runs in their previous three games including 27 in the first two games of the series, the Surf were stymied by great pitching in the afternoon affair at Bernie Robbins Stadium. LHP Rolando Viera pitched six innings of one-run baseball for his fourth win and RHP Amad Stephens picked up the save with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth. The Rox are now 21-28 overall and 1-2 in the second half after dropping the first two games of the half and the series to the Surf.

The Rox struck against RHP Ben Thurmond in the third inning when De La Cruz led off with the first of his two doubles in the game. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by CF Ryan Sickles and scored on a C Lee Rubin RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, Viera walked Can-Am OBP leader 3B Anthony Granato with the bases loaded to force in a run for the Surf.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning when LF John Allen led off with a double and scored two batters later on De La Cruz's double to the left-field wall. The Rox shortstop drove home another run two innings later with a sacrifice fly in the seventh that scored RF Tony Gonzalez, who reached earlier in the inning with a leadoff triple.

Viera left after six and RHP Matt Reilly did not allow a run in the seventh or eighth, fanning two. In the ninth, Stephens retired the side on 11 pitches and picked up the first Rox save since June 8th, a span of 34 games. The Rox play the series finale Thursday at Bernie Robbins Stadium at 7:05 PM with LHP Bryan Morse (1-2, 3.79 ERA for North Shore in 2007) taking the ball for his Rox debut against Atlantic City RHP Coogie Freedman (2-0, 2.38 ERA).
