Brockton Rox News Release
Worcester, MA (June 23, 2007) - Worcester RHP Alex Pena tossed six innings of scoreless baseball and the Tornadoes struck for five runs in the first four innings as Worcester beat the Rox 5-1 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester. The three game series is tied at a game apiece heading into Sunday's rubber game at 2:05 PM. The Rox have lost five of six and eight of their last 10. RHP Luis Carreras took the loss on the hill for Brockton, his first of the season after starting 2007 5-0. RHP Ari Kafka pitched three shutout innings for the Rox out of the pen, fanning six batters and allowing just a single baserunner.
After two scoreless innings, the Tornadoes got to Carreras in the third. After Worcester loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, RF Andrew Wishy doubled home a pair of runs into the right-field corner, and C Yohanny Valera followed three pitches later with a two-run single to left to complete the four-run barrage. In the fourth, Tornado LF Josh Beauregard hit a tape-measure HR to right-field to give Worcester a 5-0 advantage. Pena, despite allowing a pair of base runners in the first and second innings, settled into a groove and did not allow a run in his six innings on the hill.
The Rox did score a run on a 1B Francisco Lebron sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to prevent a shutout. Lebron had a single earlier in the game to extend his hitting streak to seven games and LF Jeremy Coronado had a pair of hits to prolong his hitting streak, currently at 10 games. Kafka and LHP Donavon Hendricks combined to pitch four scoreless and hitless innings out of the bullpen for Brockton in the loss.
Sunday afternoon, RHP Mike McTamney (0-3, 3.96 ERA) faces Worcester RHP D.J. Mattox (2-2, 1.47 ERA) in the rubber game starting at 2:05 PM.
