Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- Alex Pena turned in his best start of the season, tossing six shutout innings to help lead the Worcester Tornadoes to a 5-1 victory over the Brockton Rox at Hanover Insurance Park Saturday night.
Pena (2-1) would receive all the runs he would need in the 3rd inning. Josh Beauregard started the inning with a single to left off Rox righty Luis Carreras (5-1), who then walked Dominic Ramos and Chris Colabello to load the bases with no one out. That brought Andrew Wishy to the plate, and the Tornadoes rightfielder extended his league-high and Tornadoes franchise-high hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run double into the rightfield corner. It was the 19th consecutive game that the Tornadoes cracked the scoreboard first. Yohanny Valera followed with a two-run single that made it 4-0, Worcester.
Josh Beauregard made it 5-0 when he ripped a Carreras pitch over the rightfield wall with one out in the 4th inning for his first home run of the season. That was more than enough for Pena, who scattered four singles, a walk and a hit batsman over six shutout innings of work. Matt Weagle allowed a sacrifice fly by Francisco Lebron in the 8th, but that would be as close as the Rox would get. John Birtwell pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game, striking out three of the four men he faced, to end it.
Pena (2-1) earned his second win of the season and Carreras (5-1) suffered his first loss. Birtwell was credited with his 3rd save of the season, tying him with Chris Shank for team-high honors. The game was delayed briefly in the top of the 4th inning when a skunk ran out into left field. Worcester will look to take the rubber game of their three-game set with the Rox on Sunday afternoon when they send righty D.J. Mattox (2-2, 1.47) and his 23 consecutive inning scoreless streak to the mound against Brockton righty Mike McTamney (0-3, 3.96). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
